Leafly Buzz: 13 Top Cannabis Strains of March 2024

When you smoke as well as Californians, you can be sure you're smoking as well as the best in the world. That's the conclusion of the marijuana flower scene in Barcelona this March during the huge, week-long Spannabis festival.

Our monthly roundup of West Coast Fireflowers, Leafly Buzz, flew to the decriminalized Catalan city for a week of elite hash competitions, recommended visits to the best lounges, and a gathering of 10,000 people from every continent.

Of course we saw European specialties like Amnesia Haze and even a Big Buddha Cheese. But Z-tribes dominated the awards shows. Zoap and permanent markers were in abundance. The New World has re-sown the Old.

This global conversation about cannabis turned out to be full of excitement – synchronized by smartphones and Instagram. Seeds and clones move smoothly across continents. Almost anyone can build on the latest and greatest work from the hills of Humboldt County, California. So exciting. Here are 13 varieties that tell the story. Here is Leafly Buzz for March 2024 – Barcelona Edition.

Permanent marker

The leaf variety of 2024 is hitting hard in Europe. We saw purple and green cuts of Seed Junky Genetics permanent marker everywhere—including Strainhunters Club, La Selva, and Terp Army—rivaling our own in Los Angeles and San Francisco. (Some of these might be our own packs.) In any case, the “Cali Weed” part of the menu is the big part. Like German cars or Italian suits – Californian weed has hardly any competitors. There are local specialties, but in general our Leafly Buzz and seasonal and annual offerings have been right on target for what's hot in these competitions and scenes. Seed Junky seeds are coming to Germany this year, where there is legalization. Permanent Marker remains stable in the US, with page views only down 0.7% month-over-month.

Big Buddha Cheese

Remember the old school Skunk strain called Cheese? At Club La Selva we found a Cheese keeper wearing rollerblades and holding a trophy for 3rd place in “Bring Your Cheese to the Party”. He sat there on a Monday evening and enjoyed his victory before returning to England. One of the most famous pieces of cheese is the Big Buddha Cheese, named after the first guardian of the cheese “Yung”. Cheese is iconically musky and stinky with an intense skunk high. It's notorious for getting people arrested. “The smell gets everywhere,” said Lord Dank, who had to pack it four times for the trip. Next up, Lord Dank, aka Nigel, makes fresh new Big Buddha Cheese Seeds and we wish him the best of luck. See also: Gouda from Snowtill in San Francisco. It's a quarter of cheese. Page traffic for the Big Buddha Cheese strain is infrequent and volatile, declining by 35% month over month. Let's bring it back.

mimosa

Who can't enjoy a good Barcelona brunch at 3 p.m.? Barcelona destroys Sacramento, California. Flavor of Symbiotic Genetics, Mimosa. Strainhuners had a great flowering. The best hash I smoked during my entire trip was a flaky, white, solvent-free, pungent extract from La Selva. It had so much tangie, it was like a barrel full of oranges, the bottom had fermented and turned a little weird. My heart ached as I tossed my mimosa hash in the trash and headed to the airport. The Mimosa variety's highly popular site traffic fell 2.5% month-over-month.

Mendo cookies

This dessert variety from Humboldt County, California, is now growing in the underground scene in France, where it is crossed with local varieties and comes into its own even more. Bred by Higher Heights Nate, Mendo Biscuits is one of the deepest biscuits, more like a dense, sweet pastry on Las Ramblas. It grows super strong, big, healthy and strong. Mendo Biscuits and a French-grown Amsterdam 2000 Diesel Kush are now “Frendo Biscuits”. Higher Heights Nate has seeds for the global scene and his genetics are increasingly found in recreational stores.

cherry

Bask Triangle Farms grows fantastic Z's and Trop cookies, as well as Cherry Trop from Humboldt or Colorado, in the harsh, mountainous, separatist “Basque Country” of Spain. Famed horticultural author Ed Rosenthal describes the site as “steeper than Humboldt.” BTF continues its string of Spannabis wins with new Z work from the Basque Country. So cool. First up is Ztrinklez (Z x Bazkittlez) for hashish production. But there are other cool varieties with Basque names you've never heard of: Zhuleman (Ortzadar x Bazkittlez) and Geriza (Trop Cherry x Bazkittlez). The Trop Cherry xa Z strain – grown in living soil – will be like a rainbow in your mouth and brain.

Epsilon F1

Time for a science lesson. We are still on day one of cannabis breeding. We don't have that many reliable varieties to work with. Getting children to be just like their parents is called “stabilization.” This is how you make “true” varieties that are “fixed,” like the tomato seeds you buy at Lowes. An F1 hybrid strawberry has just been released. Next comes the potato. Real big boy stuff.

Well – Royal Queen Seeds from the Netherlands is putting on its big pants and running around with its first real breeding series of real “F1s”. Eight of them. Check out Epsilon F1. It's the fastest of the bunch. And it is a mix of Blue Dream, Blueberry, Amnesia Lemon Haze and Black Domina. They do about seven generations of selection and introgression to stabilize it. So the end result is something completely different. It is physically relaxing and calming. Hype guys “see this and think it’s boring,” said one salesman. But at the end of the day, fixed installations mean more money for those who can use them.

LCG x Cryptochronic

Sacramento, California-based Alien Labs icons are present in multiple markets across US states. We have seen how their seeds also end up in Spain. Probably the fastest seller was the famous Lemon Cherry Gelato x Kryptochronic from Alien Labs. LCG's creamy, berry, gassy cherry rules the US, and several hot drops featured the famous gelato work. Connected brought a Sunset Sherbert x G41 to restart the next wave of gelato on the continent. See also: Backpack Boyz' release of LCG x Dying Breed OZ Kush.

AND triploid

Do you know seedless watermelons? Get ready for seedless weed. Mostly. Humboldt Seed Co debuted “OG Triploid” at Spannabis – a strain of OG Kush designed to resist seeding. This is, among other things, ideal for large oil growing operations in pollen-rich regions. “Triploid” means that the plant has an extra set of DNA packages, called chromosomes, that disrupt the regular reproductive cycle. They are born barren, so to speak. Mostly. It is a trait that you can selectively breed for. Remember, life finds a way.

Hot on the shelves

Luna

Following an excellent recommendation, we ended up at the private Barcelona club La Selva one evening, where we enjoyed the award-winning house specialty, Luna. Luna is a Spanish variety of Tropicanna Cookies – Suguz. It brings together work from Nevada County, California, Colorado and Spain to create an even more sugary and jammy Trop Cookies. We were swept away by a tidal wave of oranges and teeth-grindingly sweet Cirtus soda – like Catalan Vichy juice. If you dip your Chips Ahoy in orange juice – if you like Tangie and GSC, you have friends in Barcelona who like Luna from RKIEM Seeds.

Banana cooler

La Selva brings the banana wave to Barcelona with Indica-Spannabis runner-up Banana Cooler. This Indica acts like a super premium Z with a hybrid effect. You can see what the judges liked. Long after you light up, you still don't want to put it out and ruin it, and it lasts until the last puff. Banana terps are ephemeral: difficult to create and difficult to hold on to. La Selve made it look easy with their banana delicious glasses.

Tea Time and RS-11

A chunky marijuana nugget in shades of lime and forest green with yellow-orange hairs lies on a white table with a black bag with the inscription

You have to give up for the LA band Wizard Treez and their work with RS-11 and the successor Tea Time. At Spannabis on Saturday March TK, British labs elbowed past you, crowding the stand like the pork futures trading desk at a rally. Packets of seeds easily cost over 100 euros, or about $120. Club La Selva took third place in all Spannabis with a tea time that has received three awards. This is perfect Z work – bringing tropical, candy-smelling and tasting green grass to the masses who can't get enough. We are 43 and still eat cherry sours. San Francisco cannabis expert Shannon McInerney nailed the name for this demographic: “Big Little Kids.”

J1

We'll be bringing it back to California for Team Elite Genetics, J1 – one of the first glasses we completed after they sent us their entire product range to test. We all need a few sativas during the day, and it's harder to be classic and effective than J1. Jack Herer remains one of the best-smelling strains due to its candy-sweet flavor, crackling orange pistils, and cleansing daytime high. The Elite Genetics team drives this classic car like it came straight from the factory. Part of a line of solid sativas: Pearadise and Orangeade. Jack fans at Barca would need a jumping jack for this stuff. Funny that we see Jack better in his adopted state of California than in his home continent of Europe. The Colombian exchange never ended.

High note

plate

Apparently everyone needs to start making piatella. It's a fine, bright, sticky, fragrant, solvent-free hash of almost pastry or confectionary quality, and it dominated Barcelona for another year. This method whips up the oleoresin to aerate it rather than allowing it to germinate and “sugary.” Finding Piatella in Barcelona or San Francisco is like finding that rare bottle of wine in Tuscany, whiskey in Scotland, or a special Italian pastry in Rome. We saw a crazy banana punch piatella at Club La Selva that cost more than 80 euros per gram. Far higher than the price of gold. Back at the apartment, it was the Piatella from Dulce De Leche that blew us away – as blonde, delicate and aromatic as amber; from another planet. Look out for more rare Piatella releases at top prices in licensed markets.
