How to clean a glass bong

Bongs and water pipes are often the culmination of a collection of marijuana paraphernalia for weed smokers. For weed enthusiasts, they provide a smooth, clean way to enjoy their weed. However, they do need to be looked after and cared for in order to maintain this high standard of smoking experience.

This is because burning marijuana creates waxy residue and tar. When this is pulled through the pipe, some of it is left behind and slowly builds up over time. This mass impairs the function of the bong and can negatively affect the taste of future hits.

All is not lost, however, as you can efficiently clean most bongs with a little effort. Glass bongs are perhaps the easiest to clean because the non-porous glass doesn’t collect dirt as much as some metal, wooden, or even silicone bongs.

There are several bong cleaners available commercially. The Formula 420, Grunge Off, Dr. Greens and Orange Chronic are just a few of them that do a great job at cleaning glass water pipes. If you have silicone, metal, or wood pipes, these may not be suitable. You should look for another suitable cleaner that will not damage your bong.

These off-the-shelf bong cleaners can be a bit expensive or not available in yours smoking shop. If so, then you can easily create your own.

  • Rubber stoppers or bong stoppers or a plastic bag and a rubber band

cleaning Your Bong

1) Remove the bowl with the lower handle (if removable). If there are other moving or detachable parts, disassemble them as well and set them aside.

2) Empty the contents (dirty bong water) from your bong by turning it upside down to allow the water to drain from the stem or mouthpiece. This is best done over an empty sink. You may have to shake it a little to get all of the water and ash out.

3) Rinse the bong in hot water. This heat will help loosen the resin. As you rinse the bong, pour water through the mouthpiece from above, swivel it around, and drain from the side opening where the bowl or stem would go. If you are cleaning a percolator bong, it may not be possible. In this case, drain the water through the top.

4) Take the bowl / down handle (if removable) and ash catcher (if removable) and empty them as well.

5) Take the Q-Tips or a small nylon brush, dip it in the rubbing alcohol, and then start removing any residue around the mouthpiece, bowl, and down handle.

6) When you have scraped off and discarded as much residue as possible, dispose of the debris that has been peeled off.

7) Rinse the down stem, flower bowl, and any other detachable parts and place each one in their own zipper lock or in plastic bags. You don’t want them pounding together and cracking or breaking.

8) Put 1 or 2 tablespoons of coarse sea salt in each sachet and at least 1/4 cup of alcohol. Rubbing alcohol is slightly acidic, so the resin that has built up is broken down. Salt is less soluble in alcohol, but you still want to put a lot into the job as an abrasive.

9) Shake each bag vigorously for 4 or 5 minutes. The salt acts as an abrasive and helps remove the bulk and residue. Then let it soak for at least 15 minutes while you work on the bong.

10) Pour at least two (three or four for large bongs) tablespoons of coarse sea salt into your bong, followed by at least half a cup of alcohol. The ratio of salt to alcohol isn’t that important as long as you have enough of it to get a good slosh off going.

11) Seal the hole with rubber stoppers or bong plugs, if present. If not, you can use a plastic bag and elastic band.

12) Shake your bong vigorously so that the salt and alcohol solution gets on all of the inner surfaces. Shake for at least 5 minutes. If your bong has complex parts or recycling chambers, these areas should be a little more focused.

13) When you are satisfied that you have the bong as clean as possible, remove the stoppers and pour out the salt and alcohol solution.

14) Thoroughly rinse your bong inside and out with hot water. The detached resin is removed by rinsing and the salt and all alcohol residues are removed. You can remove stubborn parts with a bottle brush or Q-tips.

15) Remove and rinse the flower bowl, down stem, and any other items that you previously set aside to soak in the zip lock bags

16) Dry all parts and let them cool and naturally dry out.

If you have a particularly dirty bong that hasn’t been cleaned in a while, you may need to repeat this process a few times.

Why should you clean your bong?

5 reasons to clean your bong

1. Smell
Leaving dirty water in your pipe will make it stale and start to stink your house. This is often very repulsive when you want to smoke and really want to switch off. But it’s easy to correct, and you can get rid of that stink by replacing the old water with new one every day.

2. Bacteria

Hit, hit, pass. Sharing pipes is part of the smoking experience. There is nothing wrong with sharing a pipe as long as you keep it clean. This was the long, smoky history of the bongs. However, when you use a water pipe, bacteria from your breath get into the pipe, which inevitably builds up and then starts to grow.

It happens surprisingly quickly, and in just 22 hours, the water in your bong can grow into a petri dish of bacterial colonies and potential viruses and pathogens like strep, E. coli and black powdery mildew.
You can rule out the possibility of illnesses like colds or, worse, cold sores, or spreading cold sores with regular cleaning. In extreme cases, the dirty bong water, when evaporated with your smoke, can cause a server lung infection such as pneumonia or bronchitis.
So you should clean the water daily and not leave dirty bong water in your bong for days or weeks, which is just nasty.

Imagine if you got a case of bothersome herpes and could have avoided it just by cleaning up? You will be mad at yourself. If that’s not compelling enough to stay clean, what is it?

Why not wash it regularly to give it a fresh look and enjoy the beauty of your pipe?

How often should i clean my bong?

Heavy users (defined as daily users of marijuana) should actually replace old water with new water for each new user, or at least replace the water daily. If you smoke daily, you should also thoroughly clean the tube every few days.

For those who smoke less frequently, perhaps a few times a week, you can clean the pipe less frequently, provided you don’t leave dirty bong water in the pipe for more than a day. You should also empty and clean the bowl between uses.
