Does CBD lead to less alcohol consumption?

If you are a consumer of CBD there may be an added benefit to benefiting from the compound. New research shows a link between the consumption of CBD-dominant cannabis and decreased alcohol consumption.

The study, conducted by researchers from the University of Colorado and published in the journal Psychology of Addictive Behaviors, looked at cannabis use in 120 subjects with CBD, THC, or hybrid cannabis strains.

The researchers found that users who consumed heavy CBD strains “drank fewer drinks per drinking day, had fewer alcohol consumption days, and fewer alcohol and cannabis co-consumption days than the other groups.” Users of THC or hybrid strains showed no difference between their drinking patterns.

The results of this recent study, which shows a link between CBD and less alcohol consumption, are in line with the results of previous studies. Aside from alcohol, CBD use has been linked to decreases in the use of opioids, heroin, tobacco, and other substances.

“The present study tentatively supports the assumption that plant-based CBD may be linked to reduced alcohol consumption by regular cannabis users, and suggests that it may be possible for regular cannabis users to switch to a cannabis strain with higher CBD and lower THC levels the purposes of reducing their alcohol consumption, ”concludes the study.

CBD has long been linked to decreased alcohol consumption. Previous studies have shown the compound to be useful in treating heavy and chronic drinkers, finding that those who used cannabis had less alcohol on the same day. While this relationship is not understood, the number of studies available shows that there is room in the field to research and that, with enough research, solutions and treatment options can emerge for people who use drugs and alcohol a lot.
