Would you smoke Joe Exotic’s Tiger King Weed?

In 2020, a Netflix documentary called Tiger King went viral through Joseph Maldonado Passage, better known as Joe Exotic.

The self-named Joe Exotic was once the king of a famous exotic animal park in Oklahoma. The documentary shocked people when it revealed how he and his loved ones and co-workers would shoot and drug tigers and other exotic animals, including crazy things like contract killing and wildlife crime violations. Audiences were relieved when Tiger King was sentenced to 22 years in prison in a Fort Worth correctional facility on 17 charges against wildlife plus two cases of murder.

Now he’s preparing to launch his own line of cannabis products out of federal prison. Last week he announced via Twitter that he, along with attorney Brad Small, had signed a licensing deal with the THC Group and Cannabis to develop a range of marijuana products that they will sell under the infamous Tiger King California, Colorado and Oklahoma.

“This includes top-quality edibles and various exotic varieties. The products are sold in pharmacies in these three states. It’s the Joe Exotic strain of cannabis, CBD and edibles, ”writes Joseph Maldonado-Passage on Twitter. “Ask your pharmacy about a Joe Exotic and smoke a Joe.”

Small’s role was primarily to act as an intermediary between Maldonado-Passage in prison and his new business partners. He is reportedly directly involved in the new business area. According to a TMZ report, Maldonado-Passage has agreed to sign the contract to help people in need of cannabis for medical reasons, as part of the profits will go to nonprofits that care for captive tigers.

Small also announced the June 18 auction, which was to sell both tangible and non-fungible items, including some of the jackets Joe Exotic wore in the documentary. Other items included his favorite weapon, a bikini worn by porn star Rachel Starr on the show, audio recordings of Joe Exotic from prison, and digital artwork. “I hope that everyone who buys my favorite things can give them a well-deserved home,” Joe Exotic told Fox Business in the past. “Auctioning collectibles makes me feel connected to the outside world, especially without my cats by my side. Whether you love me or hate me for what you think I did, there is no doubt that everyone wants a piece of the Tiger King! “

For those of you who haven’t seen the documentary and are wondering how Tiger King relates to cannabis, it’s the fact that his husband Travis was a huge stoner. In the documentary, Travis was portrayed as a deeply troubled teenager whom Joe married, and it appeared that he relied heavily on cannabis to survive his mental and physical pain.

Joe Exotic is just the latest celebrity to benefit from cannabis

It is a known fact that hitting a celebrity name on a product can help companies make extra cash. Given how popular recreational cannabis is becoming, why not do the same?

Celebrities have been doing this for years – partnering with cannabis companies or even launching their own line of cannabis. These days there are no limits to what you can do with cannabis businesses, and even make your own strains if you want. There’s Will Nelson, Snoop Dogg, Martha Stewart, Tommy Chong, and Jim Belushi to name a few. So Joe Exotic is just the newest of them and we can only expect many more to hit the market. And while these are some of the more common names of people who have long referred to themselves as cannabis users, don’t forget that there are endorsements from Mike Tyson, Ricky Williams, Wiz Khalifa, Jay Z, and many others too.

So far, each state has different rules and regulations for advertising and marketing cannabis by celebrities, largely because cannabis is still a List 1 substance. For this reason, it is wise for any celebrity or influencer to consult an attorney before deciding to partner with a cannabis brand.

The truth is, all of this cannabis promotion is a tremendously positive thing. While the celebs can of course make a profit from it as well, supporting cannabis use is of great help in destigmatizing the drug. Although the administration is still relatively new, the cannabis industry is still facing a political battle, particularly in the battle for state legalization. For these reasons and more, the cannabis space clearly needs strong and popular allies.

Including celebrities can cheer up the cannabis industry, help normalize it, while also helping the herb appeal to a wider audience. The popularity of cannabis will only continue to grow in the mainstream, bringing some fun and dynamism to an industry in desperate need of a big push towards legalization.
