Top 8 marijuana strains of 2021
The Leafly strain of 2021 faced serious competition! Here’s a detailed look at eight other sizes that were in the running.
Weed trends are fascinating to follow as they rise and fall over time and move across the country. That year, sales of classic strains blossomed in newer constitutional states (what’s up, Oklahoma? You really love your White Widow!), While crowd-pleasers like Gelato and Purple Punch declined in established markets. Other indomitable strains like Blue Dream, Zkittlez, and last year’s winner Runtz stayed strong across the board.
As always, the Leafly team used a combination of field research, editorial expertise and data to find out what’s trending across the country this year. We looked at what people were spending their money on and tried lots of weed to create this comprehensive list. Our results are independent and have not been influenced by any outside parties or the Leafly sales team.

The leaf variety of the year 2021 is Dosidos!
GMO cookies
GMO dominates in new crosses like this ‘ZMO’ from The Original Z. (David Downs / Leafly)
As a strong contender for strain of the year, this intoxicating strain from Mamiko Seeds is hugely popular and it’s easy to smell why. GMO Cookies is an indica-dominant hybrid that was created by crossing GSC with Chemdawg and has a sweet smell of gas and garlic. The pervasive smoke has a tangy, musty funk, a bit like your high school locker.
GMO delivers a deep body high that feels like a classic indica, with the uplifting cerebral vibrancy of its Chemdawg parent. This strain can tie you to the couch, so plan accordingly – prepare snacks, pour yourself a glass of water, and enjoy deep relaxation.
Peanut Butter Breath

East Coast heads were smoking tons of Peanut Butter Breath in 2021. Peanut Butter Breath is a cross of Dosidos and Mendo Breath (hot in Florida this year!) Developed by ThugPug Genetics. (Dosidos is also the parent of a 2020 top strain, Slurricane.) PBB’s creamy, potent smoke offers an uplifting high with a pleasant body high.
It’s easy to see why PBB is so popular – it won’t get you anywhere you don’t want to go. Perfect for a day with good friends.
Cereal milk

Desserts like wedding cake (the number 1 most wanted in the US this year) and ice cream cake (a top seller, even in Ohio) are still very popular, and cereal milk is next to them at the bud buffet. Cereal Milk is a hybrid of cookies and has GSC on both sides – its parents are Y Life (GSC x Cherry Pie) and a sativa-dominant GSC strain called Snowman.
Cereal Milk lives up to its name, with frosty nuggets and a creamy, gaseous smoke. Its genetic lineage is evident in its sweet taste and balanced, potent high, thanks in part to its Durban Poison grandparents (the # 5 strain in Colorado in 2021). A bowl of muesli milk is a great way to start a Saturday.
Apple fritters
Lumpy’s Apple Fritter: mythical, undeniable. (David Downs / Leafly)
Apple Fritter has made its way across the country from Northern California and is currently being blown up in Michigan. The closely guarded genetics of this hybrid of Lumpy’s Flowers are considered a cross between Animal Cookies and Sour Apple. This variety has a fruity acidity reminiscent of apple fritters, with notes of sugar and earth when you grind a bit. The savory smoke is deliciously funky and herbaceous.
Apple Fritter is one of those hybrids that offers a perfectly balanced mix of relaxing and uplifting effects – ideal for working on a meditative project such as under the kitchen sink. When was the last time you really came to live?
Kush mints

SoCal-strong Seed Junky Genetics are behind a ton of powerhouse strains – Leafly’s 2019 Strain of the Year Wedding Cake, Animal Cookies, LA Kush Cake – and Kush Mints is no exception. A cross of Animal Mints (# 1 in Florida in 2021) and Bubba Kush, Kush Mints has a delightfully sweet, minty taste with the underlying earthiness that Kush aficionados are familiar with. It’s a light smoke that won’t get you on the couch … unless you want to be there, in which case it will.
London pound cake
Another delicious offering from the Cookie family, London Pound Cake aka Pound Cake, has an interesting make-up. London Pound Cake is a cross of Sunset Sherbert (GSC x Pink Panties) with a potent unknown indica and has a rich berry flavor with a hint of citrus. The seemingly ubiquitous GSC parent gives this flower a robust quality with a high THC content and a deeply relaxing effect. This is a solid strain to lie down with for a blissful nap.
Fat monkey
Industry stars Exotic Genetix created Grease Monkey by crossing GG4 with Cookies and Cream (again with the GSC!). GG4 was the top-selling strain in the US in 2020 and slipped to third place this year. Grease Monkey gets its stickiness from the Original Glue with its high density of trichomes, while Cookies’ n Cream shines with sweet, earthy notes and a hint of diesel.
Grease Monkey sounds like a workhorse, but it’s really made for a day off – this potent bud is powerfully calming. Put on your pajamas and grab the remote control.
MAC

Miracle Alien Cookies aka MAC is a hybrid that originated about a decade ago by an elusive breeder named Capulator. MAC made it onto Leafly’s list of Top Strains of 2020, and it’s still on the top, exploding in Florida this year. This flower is a great genetic combination: the legendary starfighter, crossed with Colombian and alien cookies. Its dense, frosty buds have an intense citrus aroma with a touch of gas, and the smoke is nice and tangy.
The high is happy and productive – turn up your favorite album and throw yourself a dance party!
We told you: Dosidos leaf variety of the year is just the beginning. Celebrate another cannabis banner year with these sizes – and stay away from that crap weed.
