The Justice Department and DEA just issued a federal cannabis license to grow and sell weed
Maine-based cannabis company Maridose announced a few days ago that it has received federal licenses to supply and distribute cannabis concentrates, extracts and flower for pharmaceutical and research purposes.
US laws prohibit the use, sale, and distribution of cannabis for medicinal and recreational purposes. However, it allowed the University of Mississippi to study the effects and properties of cannabis use. Over the past year, the government has come under pressure from local residents, cannabis industry stakeholders and key players in the sector to legalize cannabis. The government has stated on several occasions that this process cannot be rushed because they need to be convinced that cannabis is suitable for consumption and commercial production.
It is gratifying that the government has decided to speed up the research process by licensing more cannabis supply facilities to federally licensed cannabis research facilities. Additionally, the area of legalized medical cannabis research is becoming more accessible for private investors to commercially develop cannabis-based products.
Ending the cannabis research monopoly
Maridose is one of the few companies to have received this approval from the US federal government through the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). The federal authorities described this development as a step towards breaking the monopoly on cannabis research. Since 1968, the University of Mississippi has had a monopoly on marijuana research – the cultivation and testing of these plants for pharmaceutical reasons. The university was the only Schedule 1 legal cannabis producer for 54 years, catering to licensed researchers across the country.
According to the memo, Maridose and other newly licensed facilities will grow cannabis, separate extracts and plant materials, conduct scientific research, and manufacture products for medicinal use. The Maridose facility is located in Brunswick Landing, Maine.
Maridose’s founder, Richard Shain, expressed his excitement at the license granted in a statement. He said the team is excited and proud to be among the first selected cannabis facilities. He added that this license is a huge step for the future of cannabis and science in the United States. Shain explained that her newly obtained registration number – RM063095 – is the company’s reward for five years of diligent work with the DEA. Now they can derive more profit from the cultivation and supply of cannabis flower and focus on government-recognized cannabis research companies inside and outside the United States.
Shain emphasized how proud his company is to receive one of the few licenses from the DEA. He noted that almost every other cannabis company operating in legal states cannot export their products across state lines unless the other state is also legal. Cannabis remains a Schedule 1 substance; As such, operations for unlicensed federal companies are at legal risk. Now Maridose can legally ship products across state lines and country borders without fear of national repercussions.
other details
The DEA licensed Maridose weeks after the completion of its Maine facility. Shain explained that the DEA license allows them to work with private, international and public organizations to accelerate production. Investors will also enjoy great tax benefits not available to medical and recreational cannabis operations in legitimate government markets.
In addition, cannabis scientists have unrestricted access to several cannabis strains. Not to mention that investors can legally invest in this space and advance the U.S. cannabis industry.

Tikun Olam, a pioneer in medical cannabis research, has licensed Maridose to use its intellectual property. With more than 30,000 people in the world’s largest patient database and more than 50 years of cannabis studies, Tikun Olam has developed the most thoroughly studied cannabis strains. dr Rafael Mechoulam led many of Tikun’s groundbreaking research projects and were carried out by the man known as the “Father of Cannabis Research” and “Discoverer of THC”.
Maridose will produce goods locally, giving corporations and researchers quick access to different tribes and priceless patient insights to guide their work. Millions of people across this country will eventually have access to marijuana strains that Maridose will develop, as well as industry-leading research, thanks to the clear path made for companies like Maridose.
Prof. Lumir Hanus, the leading analytical chemist in cannabis research and the person who discovered anandamide, the first endocannabinoid discovered in the human brain, serves as the panel’s scientific advisor. Hanus’ discovery is considered the foundation for all endocannabinoid system research over the past 30 years. The science and expertise of cannabis is still being advanced by the studies of Prof. Hanus.
Maridose is the sixth company to receive DEA and DOJ licenses and aims to provide consumers with premium cannabis-derived products that address important health and wellness concerns.
Conclusion
It is impossible to overstate the momentous importance of the government’s decision to increase production of research and development cannabis strains.
Cannabis is a therapeutic drug that should not be kept out of the world. With the DEA and DOJ licenses, companies like Maridose will be able to legally share the true goldmine of cannabis-based medical treatments with people who need them. The actual offense would be to remain silent despite knowing that cannabis can benefit others.
Shain concluded his statement by emphasizing that the recent development is a reward for the company’s patience and tenacity. He remarked that the journey, although long, was fulfilling. There is even a long and probably more difficult road ahead of us. But in the end everything will be worth it.
