Return to the gym? Here’s what you can do to feel more secure

Just as we were starting to recover from last year, the COVID-19 cases were rising again. And while we should know how it works by now, this situation still feels new and frightening, especially as states and corporations are going their own way. Gyms are some of the companies hardest hit by the pandemic and a great source of fear for people.

While training can be done anywhere, some people prefer to go to a place where they can be part of a community and where other people’s progress will encourage them. This is perfectly fair and should be done if it makes you feel better and happier in the long run.

In order to do what you want to do and continue to feel safe, it is important to do the things that you know work. First and foremost is vaccination, which provides comprehensive protection from the virus and also protects your community. After that, you should familiarize yourself with the guidelines for your state, county, and gym. While so many rules can be overwhelming, knowing about them can ease your anxiety and give you some control over the situation. Wear your mask and keep your distance from people, especially if they are not vaccinated. Wipe off the equipment you are using and keep washing your hands.

If you feel comfortable attending a socially distant physical education class, then move on. If just exercising on a machine makes you feel more confident, do this. There is no right or wrong behavior, and if you have battled COVID-19 anxiety and are in a gym, you are already making progress by doing your best to get back to your normal life.

The past year has been a strange one to say the least. While other people may seem to thrive and get back to the normal world, many are still struggling with anxiety, weight gain from the pandemic, and more. Whether you’re hitting the gym again or meeting up with friends in a place that feels safe and comfortable for you, try your best to be nice to yourself and celebrate your little achievements.
