Marijuana vacation rentals remain a niche but are catching on

A weed getaway is more complicated than it sounds. While you may live in a legal state, drug status in your destination matters. Marijuana is also illegal at the federal level, meaning transportation across state lines is prohibited even if it is legal. This is where cannabis vacation rentals come in.

Marijuana vacation rentals are a niche business, but it’s slowly growing. While there are some venues that simply allow you to rent the place in your (law) state and smoke your own weed without having to worry about your neighbors or your linens, there are others that take creative approaches , to make guests feel welcome and live up to expectations of a true weed holiday, including providing the weed.

Sites like BudandBreakfast.com facilitate these transactions, connecting guests with hosts who allow marijuana use on their properties. Despite having a much smaller pool of locations than sites like Airbnb, these services are in demand and are finding more and more customers.

CNBC spoke to various hosts who offer these services, who provided a breakdown of their facilities and what sets their rentals apart.

“I was really just trying to give people what they’re used to, just with the added element of cannabis,” said Nicole Butler, who rents out a cannabis bed and breakfast. With a price point that starts at $420 per night, Butler offers guests a full cannabis bar and activities like yoga, CBD massages, and more.

“I think the pandemic has pushed people towards experiences, self-care and just doing things that make them feel good,” she said.

Similar offerings provide people with a convenient place to smoke cannabis, whether BYOB or provided on-site. The listings also provide guests with essential information about local dispensaries and cannabis events in the area, all in hopes of getting people to smoke some weed on their vacation.

While cannabis tourism remains a niche activity and something that requires extensive research up front, more and more people are getting interested in the idea, looking for ways to monetize it and provide a good experience for customers.

As more states legalize recreational marijuana, more weed dispensaries will pop up, especially ones that combine wellness and the healthy addiction that many cannabis users are looking for.
