What is 420?
420, 4:20 or 4/20 (pronounced twenty-four) is known in cannabis culture as “Weed Day,” specifically smoking at 4:20 pm, and also refers to cannabis-oriented celebrations that take place annually April 20 ( that’s 4/20 in US form).
420 The Origins of World Cannabis Day
There are some claims about the origin of how 420 was associated with weeds. One is the claim that it is a police radio code, but there is no credible evidence to back it up. Another claim is based on Dylan’s song “Rainy Day Women # 12 & # 35”, which reads “Everyone must be stoned”. Now the 420 part comes from multiplying 12 and 35 which gives 420. This also seems very far-fetched. The most widely accepted and likely story comes from a story about high school friends in California. There are two different versions of how this came about. One theory suggests that in 1971 five high school students in San Rafael, Calif., Used the term “4:20” in connection with the project to search for an abandoned marijuana crop. based on a treasure map suggested by the producer. They called themselves Waldos because they were hanging on a wall outside of school. The five students (Steve Capper, Dave Reddix, Jeffrey Noel, Larry Schwartz, and Mark Gravich) met at 4:20 pm at the stainless steel and granite statue of Louis Pasteur on the San Rafael High School grounds. The Waldos referred to this meeting schedule as “Louis 4:20”. After several failed attempts to find the crop, the group shortened their sentence to “4:20,” which eventually evolved into a code used by teenagers to warn about marijuana use.
The other theory is: Stephen Hagel of the High Times is responsible for promoting the story of Waldos and thus spreading it 420 in popular culture. The first mention of 4:20 smoking and a 4/20 holiday appeared in the High Times in May 1991, and the Waldos association appeared in December 1998. Hage subsequently attributed the early spread of the phrase to the “Grateful Dead” fans “Waldo” Reddix became a roadie for Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh, demanding that 4:20 pm be a socially acceptable time of day for marijuana use.
