Jeff Bezos, one of the richest men in the world, took off into space on July 20, 2021. You’d think that getting into the stratosphere is more than enough to get high, but Bezos is looking for other ways to get high.

July 20, 2021 looks like a promising day as his company took a groundbreaking move on the same day to support cannabis legislation. They officially began campaigning for marijuana reform.

Why is America’s richest man interested in marijuana?

Bezos supports marijuana reform

A significant percentage of Americans want positive cannabis reforms that include decriminalizing the substance and legalizing it at the federal level. This longing for reform has led to the formulation and scrutiny of several cannabis laws that were passed in the House of Representatives, but with little progress in the Senate.

The MORE ACT is one of those promising pieces of legislation and, if passed, can effectively remove cannabis from the proposed substances list. The bill will also remove marijuana from the Controlled Substances Act and lift criminal penalties for those who produce, supply and possess cannabis.

Amazon is America’s retail giant, and in 2020 that company had approximately $ 21.3 billion in after-tax income, while sales of legal marijuana across America grossed $ 17.5 billion. Cannabis enthusiasts and experts claim that Bezos’ support for marijuana reforms could have a significant impact on the legislative process to expedite the passage of laws that favor the legalization of cannabis.

Political support and deliberate effort to fund government efforts are critical to getting bills through and getting results fast. The assistant administrator of the Marijuana Policy Project claims that Bezos can make both contributions through Amazon. He also believes that through such efforts there will be a positive change in the marijuana reform movement in America.

Please note that while Bezos is interested in contributing to the thriving cannabis community in America, Amazon’s support for the cannabis industry does not necessarily mean that Amazon will begin selling and distributing cannabis products in America anytime soon. Amazon stopped marijuana testing because America’s dwindling workforce meant Amazon had to cut weed testing to find more employees.

A Fortune article published last June stated that Bezos’ personal position on marijuana is unclear, but in most cases he tends to be libertarian and is a company that would benefit exponentially if there were national legalization and Amazon Prime vans could deliver cannabis right to your doorstep.

A major victory for cannabis reform in America

Some experts have expressed skepticism about Amazon’s “sudden” leap into the cannabis reform discourse. Still, it’s worth noting that this is a BIG win for the marijuana community, regardless of their motive. Bezos’ actions are a commendable move that could inspire other leading entrepreneurs to do the same.

Amazon’s sales are on par with Norway’s GDP, which means the company has the financial resources to maintain this momentum until reforms are passed.

Now that Jeff Bezos is pro-cannabis, he’ll have Congressmen lobbying to push through marijuana reforms as the company believes the move is “bigger than Amazon”. Other pro-marijuana nations are taking the marijuana legalization process seriously, and while it looks like America is still leading through state efforts, the federal government is still lagging behind.

Bezos places particular emphasis on the MORE ACT, which, among other factors, would mitigate repression in the state cannabis market and erase millions of criminal archives for nonviolent offenders.

Other leading entrepreneurs are becoming pro-cannabis

In addition to Jeff Bezos’ contribution, other American billionaires are following the same path. Tesla and SpaceX’s Elon Musk was spotted smoking marijuana with Joe Rogan. Musk also tweeted his support for marijuana; a tweet with up to 680,000 likes.

In the tweet, he stated that selling marijuana used to be a major crime, but with the COVID-19 pandemic. When the pandemic started it became “essential business,” but many Americans are still in jail for cannabis offenses.

Koch Industries CEO Charles Koch will also provide $ 25 million to fight the cannabis ban. He has also supported other marijuana-related endeavors through his advocacy group, Americans for Prosperity.

The advocacy group is trying to free people jailed for marijuana crimes and has currently spent up to $ 70 million on its cause. In a recent Forbes article, it was revealed that Bill Gates and Sean Carter (Jay-Z) also share similar goals and ambitions for the marijuana market.

The scale of these efforts by some of the wealthiest people in America will create a ripple effect in the future as cannabis is expected to become legal at the federal level. More than ever, the US Senate is in the spotlight on doing the right thing on the numerous cannabis reform bills.
