Does Francis Ford Coppola consume weed?
His talent created Apocalypse Now, the Godfather films and now Megalopolis – but does he use marijuana?
He is a legend in the film industry and directed Apocalypse Now and The Godfather. He burst onto the scene in the 1960s and 70s and gave birth to a new generation of films. He is considered one of the greatest directors of all time and also made a name for himself in the wine industry. One of the wineries displays some of his five Oscars, six Golden Globe Awards, two Palmes d'Or and his British Academy Film Award (BAFTA). With all the creativity and pressure, does Francis Ford Coppola use weed?

In the '60s and '70s, weed came out of the closet and creative minds, artists, celebrities and everyday people from New York to LA gave it a try. “Turn on, tune in, tune out” was the counterculture-era phrase popularized by Timothy Leary in 1966. The talented director was able to reflect on the past and embrace the new with his film. It was one of his early successes, Apocalypse Now, that brought marijuana to the public. There are great clips of Dennis Hopper getting stoned on set.
“Megalopolis” could be the last major project film for the director, and it took 40 years to complete. His unique approach is to make headlines again by telling the team that he spent hours smoking copious amounts of cannabis while everyone waited.
“I haven’t done drugs at all in my life, except for some weed,” Coppola said. “I found the effect the weed would have on me interesting. Firstly, it would keep me extremely focused. So when I was trying to evaluate a script or write a script, I wasn't thinking about all the things that were hurting my feelings or worried about them.”
He added: “I’m sure weed affects different people in different ways. As for me, I tended to be very focused. When I smoked a joint, I couldn't sleep. I would want to work. And often I would stay up all night trying to rewrite a script.”

As a smart businessman, he turns his passion into money. His love of wine earned him money with two wineries, his love of beauty and travel landed him a luxury hotel, and his love of cannabis got him into the industry. Coppola founded the Sana Company in 2018 in collaboration with Humboldt Brothers and released The Grower's Series brand.
