Cat Piff – The Papermill Cannabis Co., Maine, Fall 2024
90 out of 100 points
Price: $35 per eighth, but varies
When talking about the typical flavors of the East Coast, one has to mention Cuban Black Haze or Piff.
Now that much of the East Coast lives in a world where we no longer have to hide in alleys to smoke, producers like Papermill Cannabis Co in Maine are capitalizing on their genetics of nostalgia and imagination.
Papermill is one of the longest-running successful breeders of Piff crosses like Lavender Piff, Midnight Mass and Piff Coast 3, as well as other old-school flavors like '87 Lem OG and Sour Diesel. But Cat Piff prevails by best presenting old-school genetics with new-school technology. His 2nd place finish as Cat Piff's live rosin trophy highlights this
Cat Piff is Papermill's in-house pollination and selection of the NorCal version of Cat Piss x Purple Manguito from Piff Coast Seeds' 707 Seedbank, both of which were also selected during in-house seed searches.
“The NorCal cat piss [was] so squat and the inner space so large that you couldn't fit a sheet of paper between them. They’re really difficult to grow and even Purple Urkle goes way beyond what Cat Piss does,” said Papermill’s Joel.
“But it has a crazy smell that I thought went well with Haze. Purple Manguito [Mango Haze x Harlem Dreams] is a large, towering plant that produces a lot of resin. Cat Piff looks like the Manguito but has Cat Piss and Piff functions.”
Overall, the flavor of mango pine and dryer sheets results in an energizing and floating effect without any crash or frenzy.
In flower, Cat Piff looks denser and rounder than your average Piff and the nose is reminiscent of mango over pine and dryer leaves. Potency is solid, but Papermill claims that the hash really shines, and despite the sub-1% yield, the effect is a “10-fold high” over the flower, according to Joel, who also describes the oil as almost like a Degreaser described the bubble bags. Overall, the flavor of mango pine and dryer sheets results in an energizing and floating effect without any crash or frenzy. It's the type of strain that appeals to people of all ages and represents the East Coast at its best. —Max Blickstein
