Indiana lawmakers agreed that more research into the potential health benefits and decriminalization of THC products — including marijuana, Delta-8 and Delta-9 — is needed before further legislative action is taken, KPVI reported.

The Legislative Council of the General Assembly overwhelmingly supported the idea of assigning the Interim Study Committee on Public Health, Behavioral Health and Human Services to further review the issue.

With legislative action expected during the 2023 session, the task force will consult experts and make public statements on THC issues. In addition, several meetings are expected to take place in the summer or autumn.

“It’s a way to look at it broadly and see what Indiana state policy should be,” said House Speaker Todd Huston (R), chairman of the Legislative Council. “Further studies on Delta 8 and Delta 9 are definitely needed.”

The study committee’s recommendation would be considered purely advisory, leaving the final decision on the legalization of cannabis to the full General Assembly.
