Want some free marijuana plants?

The citizens of Thailand are certainly looking forward to next month as the government is giving away one million home-grown cannabis plants completely free of charge.

Anutin Charnvirakul, the Minister of Public Health of Thailand, who has been at the forefront of campaigning for the decriminalization of cannabis in the country, plans to give away up to a million marijuana plants for free once use and personal cultivation, according to reports from Nation Thailand legalized in June. Speaking to Nation Thailand, Anutin explains that it will enable the government and citizens to generate revenues of over 10 billion baht a year from hemp and cannabis.

In addition, people can showcase their knowledge of marijuana and hemp and sell their products across the country.

Enthusiastic support from Health Minister Anutin

Anutin signed legislation in February officially removing marijuana, commonly known as weed, from a controlled substances list.

Strictly regulated marijuana use was decriminalized in 2018, and various bans were subsequently relaxed.

Thailand’s officials want a new marijuana industry to emerge that not only generates hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue a year, but also attracts traveling foreigners who have only recently come back in large numbers after being very absent during the coronavirus pandemic .

Once the bill goes into effect on June 9th, possession and use of all parts of cannabis plants, as well as seeds and flowers, will be allowed. Nonetheless, the content extracted from the plant remains illegal if it exceeds 0.2% THC or tetrahydrocannabinol, which is the psychoactive ingredient that makes you feel high.

The law signed by Anutin in February that removes marijuana from the country’s narcotics list after medical cannabis use was legalized in 2020, makes Thailand the first Southeast Asian country to implement the reforms. At the signing ceremony, Anutin explained that like other herbs, marijuana has many medicinal benefits and officials are working very hard to ensure that it benefits the people of Thailand both medicinally and economically.

In a post on Facebook, Anutin explained that Thais will be allowed to grow as many marijuana plants as they want in their homes once the reforms take effect. The marijuana grown must be of medical grade and for medical use only, but there is no need for registration. It is currently legal for registered businesses to sell marijuana products with less than 0.2% THC.

Keep it within the law.

Anutin issued a statement that people no longer need a permit or license to grow marijuana in their homes as long as it is declared that it is for medical use and does not have THC levels above the legal maximum. Under the regulations set out for the country, retail sellers of cannabis products are not required to register with the Food and Drug Administration. However, large companies must obtain government approval.

Anutin explained that growing cannabis at home will no longer require a permit as long as it is declared for medical use and the THC content does not exceed the legal maximum. Under Thai law, retail distributors of cannabis products are not required to register with the Food and Drug Administration.

However, large companies still need to obtain authorization and a license from the national Food and Drug Administration to manufacture marijuana-related products, which are considered to be used primarily for food additives and medicines.

Periphery of the new law

As of the end of last month, the country’s Food and Drug Administration had received around 4,700 applications for licenses to cultivate, possess, produce and import hemp and cannabis, according to Bangkok Post newspaper reports.

Large companies must still obtain approval from the country’s Food and Drug Administration to manufacture cannabis products, which are considered to be used primarily for medicines and food additives. According to a Food and Drug Association official, products slated for manufacture include hemp seed oil, dietary supplements, beverages, flavored sauces, jelly candies, and convenience foods.

Anutin’s Bhumjai Thai Party, a key coalition government partner, pushed for the legalization of cannabis in the 2019 general election, claiming it would help farmers in the country. Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul announced in a Facebook post on May 8 that his goal is for marijuana crops to be grown like normal household crops.

The updated law, which is scheduled to take effect on June 9, as previously mentioned, will allow individuals to grow their marijuana plants from the comfort of their own home, but only after informing their local government. By law, the plants must be used only for medicinal purposes and be of medicinal quality. In addition, the marijuana plant may not be used commercially without obtaining the appropriate license.

Thailand’s strategy to market cannabis as a commercial crop has taken another step forward. According to the World Bank, agriculture employs around a third of the country’s workforce. In 2018, Thailand became the first country in Southeast Asia to legalize cannabis for medical research and consumption in a region known for harsh penalties for illegal drugs.

Local marijuana regulations have also been relaxed across the country. After allowing their use in consumer products last year, Thai beverage and cosmetics companies rushed to create products containing hemp and CBD, a chemical compound that doesn’t intoxicate consumers.

bottom line

The bill aims to pave the way for individuals to use the plant in medicinal soups or teas. Using cannabis without a legal prescription or as a patient with a medical condition is still considered a criminal offence. You are only allowed to grow cannabis and use it as you wish if you have a prescription.

Although recreational use of the plant is still illegal, smoking marijuana will still occur and there is nothing the government can do about it.
