Cannabis-based lubricants can help you take it a step further

Romance is great and sex can be delicious, but there are a few things that make it even better. Lube is one of them…straight or gay, it's a basic, like salt on fries. It increases pleasure, reduces friction and helps prevent injuries. If you use condoms, the lubricant also reduces the chances of them breaking or falling off in the middle of fun. And cannabis-based lubricants can help you take it a step further.

The most common psychoactive compound in marijuana is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, also known as THC. The plant also contains more than 60 related compounds known as cannabinoids. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive compound found in cannabis and hemp plants. A cannabis-based lubricant can have either or both, giving you options for your experience.

A THC-based lubricant used topically does not provide the same sensation as when inhaled or ingested. You won't get high, but it may cause increased blood flow or sensitivity in the female area or buttocks. As you age, you may lose some feelings, but the THC may bring back some feelings in the short term.

A cannabis-based CBD lubricant can also increase the effect. Some are more practical, such as treating pain and inflammation, especially for women who struggle with painful or uncomfortable sex. Like most mucous membranes, the vagina is very absorbent, acting like a sponge and absorbing the effects of the compound within a few minutes.

CBD can relax the muscles in the pelvic area, including the uterus, bladder, anal sphincters, and pelvic floor. The compound can also reportedly improve blood flow, facilitate orgasms, and make the entire sexual encounter easier.

“We know that CBD acts as a vasodilator, meaning it increases blood flow,” said Kiana Reeves, a somatic expert. “Increased blood flow to the genitals and the cavernous body network is the basis for arousal and increased sensations.”

For men, there isn't much that CBD lube can do other than lubricate. However, Men's Health says CBD lube can be applied to your butt and should have largely the same effects as when applied to the vagina.

As with most lubricants, it's important to pay attention to the ingredients. Since cannabis and CBD are unregulated, it's important to source them from reputable retailers and brands. Plus, you can avoid harmful materials like chemicals, glycerin, and more.

Before using the product, read the instructions. Some items require lubricant to be applied a few minutes beforehand or are not compatible with condoms and silicone toys.
