According to Anthony Mahler, Belize's Minister of Tourism, over 80 percent of our business comes from the United States and Canada. Marijuana is legal throughout Canada and much of the United States. Public opinion favors legalization and younger generations prefer on-the-go options and more discreet consumption.

Generation Z has moved away from alcohol, but has opted heavily for soft drinks and traveling in California. Belize is a good option for adventure. Marijuana use is widespread and generally tolerated. Possession or use of 10 grams or less on private property was decriminalized in November 2017. However, it is still technically illegal and possession can result in fines or more.

The government of Belize announced in 2012 that it was considering decriminalizing the possession of small amounts of cannabis. In October 2017, the House of Representatives passed an amendment to the Misuse of Drugs Act that decriminalized possession or consumption of 10 grams or less on private premises. The bill was signed by the Governor General in early November.

In 2017, opposition leader John Briceño stated, “It's time we stop locking up our young people for a piece of weed.” It's time we decriminalize smoking marijuana and prepare the necessary research to do so “To legalize marijuana for medical purposes and in small quantities.”

So when you head to Belize's white beaches and inland activities, think about how much you're using, be discreet, and have a great time.
