According to one study, people with these conditions are more likely to overuse cannabis

One of the most common medicinal uses of marijuana is to relieve conditions like depression and anxiety. But a new study suggests that these types of consumers are more likely to overuse cannabis over a short period of time, resulting in disruption to cannabis use and little relief from the initial symptoms they treated.

The study, published in the JAMA Network Open, followed over 200 adult patients in Boston, all of whom searched for their medical marijuana cards. They were divided into two groups: one who received their medical marijuana cards immediately, and another who had to wait 12 weeks to get their cards.

The study shows that those who received their medical cannabis ID right away were more likely to develop cannabis use disorder, a condition in which people depend on the drug to feel better. Using marijuana for anxiety or depression increased the risk of cannabis use disorder by 20%.

The researchers’ other findings include the fact that those who received their health card immediately did not report better mental health, but they did report better sleep habits and overall health. Despite the fact that cannabis is often recommended to treat people with mood disorders, the study found that the plant did not provide the positive results that were expected.

“Our study underscores the need for better decision-making about whether to begin cannabis use for certain medical conditions, particularly mood and anxiety disorders, which are associated with an increased risk of cannabis use disorder,” said lead author Jodi Gilman.

The scientific data on cannabis and mental health is still in its early stages. Although much anecdotal evidence correlates the two, many questions remain unanswered when it comes to science and facts. While some studies have found positive links between cannabis and mood disorders, others have found the opposite. It is important that cannabis is fully researched, especially when people are planning to replace their usual medications with cannabis.
