Stone and Boning – Can You Smoke Weed While Taking Viagra?

You may have heard of Viagra or its generic name Sildenafil Citrate if you are a male with Erectile Dysfunction (ED). ED is the inability to achieve or maintain an erection and/or a decrease in sexual desire. One of the most commonly prescribed ED drugs on the market, Viagra improves a man’s ability to get or maintain an erection for sexual activity by increasing blood flow to the penis. When ED is caused by physiological or physical problems like diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, or high cholesterol, Viagra may be beneficial.

However, ED can also be caused by mental illnesses like depression and anxiety, as well as stress or lifestyle choices like smoking and poor sleep patterns, or some medications can make it worse. Talking to a doctor before using Viagra for ED is crucial to make sure it’s the right course of action.

Many men living in states where recreational cannabis is legal may wonder if it is safe to indulge in the recreational substance while taking Viagra. This article examines the anecdotal and scientific evidence surrounding the interaction between Viagra and cannabis and its impact on erectile dysfunction.

Cannabis and Viagra

Cannabis can benefit men with low libido and those suffering from premature ejaculation. Cannabis also helps increase male sexual performance in general, including achieving and maintaining an erection. With this in mind, cannabis has been shown to have direct effects on libido by increasing levels of arousal, delivering neurotransmitters to the brain, and interacting with the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which regulates pleasure and relaxation, eventually enhancing both.

According to Jordan Tishler, MD, CEO/CMO at inhaleMD, a patient-centric clinical practice and President of the Association of Cannabinoid Specialists, cannabis and PDE-5 inhibitors like Viagra and Cialis, which relax muscles and increase blood flow to the penis, are generally safe together to use. Tishler confirmed that there is some evidence that THC can interact with Cialis (tadalafil) in particular, although he has never observed this as a problem in the real world.

Tishler goes on to explain that this suggests that some interactions are hypothetical but don’t appear to be taking place in reality (or at least aren’t obvious). He added that he had never encountered a Cialis side effect related to cannabis. That may be true, but it doesn’t seem to be happening.

However, cannabis is fairly dose-dependent, notes Tishler. A little can be beneficial, but too much can have the opposite effect and stop sexual enjoyment. Excessive use of cannabis can lead to loss of erection in men with erectile dysfunction (ED). All in all, cannabis can be quite useful, but it’s best used under the supervision of a doctor to avoid side effects.

Cannabis and Viagra can also complement each other. It is important to note that CYP3A4, a liver enzyme primarily responsible for Viagra’s metabolism, can be blocked by CBD. This indicates that the effects of sildenafil (Viagra) can be enhanced when taken together, increasing the possibility of side effects such as headaches and dizziness. More studies are needed as not much has been done explicitly on inhibitors or male sexual health and well-being.

Cannabis, erectile dysfunction and other underlying issues

Sexual stimulation involves the brain, emotions, nerves, hormones, muscles and blood vessels. Therefore, ED can be caused by problems with any of these components. Stress is another possible trigger. It is often a combination of mental and physical problems. In such situations, cannabis can be beneficial.

The endocannabinoid system regulates male erectile function and sexual behavior through binding receptors in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus. This could also explain why cannabis has improved sexual function in patients suffering from illnesses or symptoms of anxiety, depression and pain.

Animal and human research has shown that cannabis has a peripheral effect on ED, specifically the corpus cavernosum. This erectile tissue makes up most of the penis and contains cannabinoid receptors. However, not all research works agree. Some research has linked cannabis use to difficulty having an orgasm in men. In fact, in a survey of Australian men, both premature ejaculation and delayed ejaculation are linked to cannabis use.

It is unclear whether this is related to cannabis or whether regular cigarette smoking combined with cannabis use refutes this conclusion. However, most researchers agree that the right amount of cannabis can turn an ordinary event into a remarkable one, including a sexual experience.

A 2021 review article on cannabis and male reproductive health claims that certain research has found that 70-85% of marijuana users experience greater sexual pleasure and satisfaction, 25-40% longer sexual duration and 55-70% report an increased orgasmic experience. THC can slow down time and increase sexual pleasure, while CBD can relieve stress, anxiety, and even depression by stimulating serotonin receptors in the brain.

According to some research, testosterone levels can even increase with cannabis use. However, other research has shown that THC has the opposite effect on testosterone and that it also somewhat dampens passion (dosage is key, less is more). However, more research needs to be done, including human studies. So, can marijuana replace Viagra? It probably can’t for most men, but the combination can guarantee orgasm, arousal, and overall satisfaction.

Conclusion

In one case, a combination of inhaled marijuana and Viagra triggered a heart attack. Despite this, this case has not been replicated on a large scale. Several studies have also found a link between erectile dysfunction and cannabis use. Unfortunately, the data varies, making it impossible to predict whether cannabis would reduce Viagra’s effectiveness and overall impact on human health.

Viagra and cannabis work in different ways. It’s possible that cannabis may help reduce anxiety while improving sexual desire, affect, and function. Very little is currently known about how the two drugs interact with each other and their overall impact on human health. Therefore, we advise you to stay on the safe side and not to combine both substances until there is a factual and acceptable conclusion.
