Women who share their bed with a dog sleep the best

It turns out that being a man’s best friend provides a HUGE benefit to women!

Dogs are the number one pet, with over 25% of the world’s population having owned a dog at some point. In fact, Argentina (82%), Mexico (81%) and Brazil (76%) have the highest proportions of pets – with dogs topping the list. I bet you knew that data has shown that women who share their bed with a dog appear to sleep the best?

Not only are there multiple benefits. If they offer companionship, they offer other benefits. Dogs keep you active, help you calm down and make you more social. They improve the lives of children and the elderly. Some pet owners sleep with their pets. Researchers are studying the world of sleep and animal ownership and want to find out whether this has an influence on people.

Scientists from Canisius College in Buffalo, New York, found the answer and published their findings in Anthrozoös, a journal that focuses on human-animal interactions. While sleeping next to people is known to have some positive and negative effects, much less is known about the benefits and dangers of sleeping with your pet. Until now.

Researchers surveyed over 962 women living in the United States and collected data on their sleep patterns and partners, particularly looking for information about the connection between pet ownership and sleep. More than half, 57 percent, of the participants slept with people, 55 percent with dogs and 31 percent with cats. Dog owners showed earlier bedtimes and earlier wake-up times, which surprised everyone except dog owners because we’ve all been woken up by a stray paw in the face just before the alarm clock went off.

Compared to human partners, dogs offered more safety and security and were less likely to disturb women while they slept. Sorry friends, dogs are cuter and calm too. Cats had the worst of it: The study concluded they were just as disruptive as human partners and less calming than any other companion.

Science now confirms the fact that there is no better cuddly dog than a sleepy dog. Dog owners have always known this, now they just have a chance to show it to their germaphobe friends and prove to them that there’s a reason why they’re always covered in hair.
