Why sex leads to better sleep, according to science
Sex and sleep are a great combination, something that’s incredibly convenient and perhaps why sex before bed is so common. But why is this happening? Is it a real thing that can be explained by science, or is it a statement we believe based on anecdotal evidence?
The connection between sex and sleep is very real, with scientists stating that the sleepy feeling after sex is due to the hormones the body releases. However, whether or not someone feels sleepy after sex is up to the individual and depends on a variety of factors.
“Sex and other forms of physical intimacy before bedtime have been shown to increase drowsiness, decrease the time it takes to fall asleep, and improve overall sleep quality,” said Dr. Shanon Makekau to Everyday Health.

Once sex is over, two hormones are released: oxytocin and prolactin. The first is the love hormone, which is known to promote bonding and affection and help people sleep better. The latter is known to increase during sleep and peaks after orgasm, which explains why some want to fall asleep immediately afterwards.
Other reasons you might feel sleepy after sex include physical exertion and emotional fatigue. Even if you don’t engage in crazy positions during sex, it’s still a cardio workout, and therefore an activity that releases endorphins, improves blood flow, and is tiring.

As for your emotions, when people have sex with someone they trust, they lower their alertness and can feel very relaxed as a result. This can lead to sleep or a feeling of emotional exhaustion, which is likely to lead to sleep as well.
Sex and sleep have a solid relationship supported by hormones, physical fatigue, and emotional vulnerability. Still, don’t stress if you don’t. Sex feels different from person to person and can be influenced by a variety of factors.
