Why is one bottle of CBD priced at $20 and the other bottle at $1,020?

As with any other product on the market, there are significant differences when buying cheap versus expensive cannabis.

A new analysis by Leafreport just proved this, although we didn’t expect them to find such a big difference. Leafreport has already conducted analysis every 6 months to give consumers insight into the current CBD market, including helpful data such as in-depth pricing studies that help compare 3,000+ CBD products from 100+ brands.

Their CBD reports have proven valuable to both consumers and industry insiders as the market continues to grow and it has become difficult to decipher which products are worth spending our hard-earned cash on.

They found that there is a 5,100% difference when comparing the cheapest and most expensive CBD items on the market. CBD isolate is currently the best-priced product on the market, averaging 19% cheaper than it was in April 2021 when they got the same data. Meanwhile, capsules were the product that saw the biggest price increase over the period, up 2.55%.

The largest price difference was found in the topical products category, where the most expensive product differed from the cheapest by 11,142%. They also found that for the second straight year, Industrial Hemp Farms was the brand with the most economical products overall, while Kushly was the most expensive brand. The 5,100% difference turned out to be the largest industry difference they found in edibles.

price factors

Leafreport spoke to Laura Fuentes, Green Roads CBD Chief Officer of Science and Innovation, about the factors affecting pricing. “Companies like Green Roads that spend big bucks on high-quality raw materials, third-party testing, and other best practices will obviously be more expensive than other brands that skip these steps — and costs — entirely,” she says.

“If you look at the prices of all the top players in the industry, the price difference isn’t that big as most follow the same production process and have similar costs. The gap begins to show when companies that fly under the radar and don’t adhere to accepted manufacturing practices emerge with lower prices – consumers should be wary of prices that seem too good to be true.”

They also spoke to Mitch Meyers, a co-founder of BeLeaf Life Oils, who emphasizes that consumers get what they pay for. “It’s very important that people who are taking CBD for health and wellness purposes understand the company, the source of their hemp, and the testing program of the company that makes the products,” says Meyers.

Meanwhile, Winston Peki, Editor-in-Chief of Herbonaut, says the way CBD is produced is an important factor in determining the final price. “The price differences for all CBD products, whether oils, creams or gummies, depend heavily on the production process,” he says. He also notes that extraction processes affect price because full-spectrum CBD products cost more than isolates whether the brand is vertically integrated or not, and the plants of the hemp part used also play a role.

“It’s wrong to compare CBD product prices based on how much CBD you’re getting for a given price,” he says. “Other hemp compounds can significantly increase the potency of CBD and may also produce unique effects through their interactions with CBD.”

“Paradoxically, isolating CBD from an extract is cheaper than trying to remove all non-beneficial compounds but trying to keep all beneficial compounds in the extract,” Peki said. “When you isolate CBD, you just filter out everything else. If you want to preserve other cannabinoids and volatile compounds like terpenes, you need a much more sophisticated filtering process, which can be more expensive.”

Other factors that play a role

While CBD generally costs more than other types of wellness supplements, there are many things that affect the final price.

One of them is the hemp source; Ideally, you should opt for organic hemp, as hemp plants are dynamic bioaccumulators by nature – they basically absorb all substances in the environment in which they are grown. This means that even if they were grown using pesticides and chemicals, you will put those things into your body. Buying CBD from organic farmers ensures better quality and purity, while giving you peace of mind that it’s rich in all the good stuff and free of chemicals.

The CBD extract spectrum also plays a role; There are isolates, broad spectrum and full spectrum on the market. Isolated cannabidiol is cheap and widely available, but many consider it less beneficial compared to broad-spectrum and full-spectrum CBD because it doesn’t offer the benefits of the entourage effect. Broad-spectrum refers to CBD, which is similar to full-spectrum, although it does not contain THC. Then, full-spectrum CBD will give you the compound makeup that comes closest to that found in the hemp plant, as it contains a rich assortment of terpenes and cannabinoids already found naturally in hemp, as well as some traces of THC – although it’s usually the Fall is 0.3% or less.

Full spectrum CBD will always be the superior product as it has been tested and proven to be more effective, so it is no surprise that it is more expensive.

It also matters how much CBD concentration is in a product. Highly concentrated CBD is more expensive because it also offers better value for money since the cost of CBD per mg is lower in your dose. The rationale for this is similar to buying your groceries in bulk.

Some CBD products also contain other ingredients that can increase the price, such as: B. natural flavors, organic honey, etc. Then there are also third-party tests that are recommended for all hemp products. CBD products that can provide you with a third-party lab certificate of analysis give consumers peace of mind knowing they are seeing unbiased test results.

We hope this has helped you make a more informed decision the next time you buy CBD products.
