Why Don’t Canadians Buy Legal Weed? 20% of legally produced marijuana is actually sold to consumers in Canada

The amount of cannabis destroyed every month in the legal recreational market is shocking.

Since the industry was approved for adult use, licensed cannabis producers have depleted a large percentage of their cannabis stocks.

Destruction of much of Canada’s total cannabis production

Public attention has been drawn to this activity since it was first discovered in 2018.

The Canadian cannabis company reported that the Canadian industry’s licensed companies are actively destroying legally grown produce. This is surprising given that recreational cannabis legislation is only a few years old and the industry shouldn’t be part of such a degree of destruction.

These companies destroy these varying amounts of cannabis either through the killer litter method or through incineration.

The Marijuana Business Daily Company confirmed the report by the Canadian company Cannabis Corporate. The trade media company confirmed that the practice of destroying large amounts of weed began in October 2018 when the recreational market began operations.

From fall 2018 through the end of the year – December 31st – the company estimates that at least 11 tons of marijuana were destroyed by licensed producers. In the following year, at least 15 percent of the total recreational pot produced was also destroyed. Last year, another 20 percent of all cannabis products that are supposed to be sold on the legal market were destroyed by cannabis producers.

More than 500 tons of unpackaged and packaged cannabis products were destroyed between 2018 and 2020. Packaged products include dried cannabis, extracts, edibles, and topical products.

According to the pooled reports, the total amount of dried cannabis put on the market for sale is less than 20 percent of the production produced in these cannabis farms. Since the legal market was launched in 2018, less than 40% of the cannabis produced has been sold.

This begs the question “Why?”.

Why did the licensed manufacturers choose to destroy a significant part of their overall products?

Another cannabis media publication, Vice, revealed that for every kilogram of cannabis produced each month, at least eight kilograms are dried or burned.

This activity doesn’t surprise others in the industry

Large-scale destruction of Canadian cannabis has become the norm in the industry. Various sources and industry-watching blogospheres have long been involved in this massive destruction.

The waste first became public in the fourth quarter of 2018. At that time, Germany was conducting an eagerly anticipated selection process for a Canadian cannabis manufacturing company. The process was later delayed due to a lawsuit. A decision on the domestic offer was not made until April 2019.

The domestic offering included Canopy Growth. After some time in the race for German cultivation, the then CEO of the group, Bruce Linton, decided out of the blue to step out of the offer and instead buy the only company that produces synthetically produced dronabinol in Germany.

Canopy Growth’s switchgear report triggered the destruction of several packages of cannabis. Though how everything has headed in that direction, it remains cryptic and hidden in the disjointed steps of the largest cannabis companies in Canada.

Other reasons for the widespread destruction

Aside from the games that the biggest cannabis companies seem to be playing, the widespread destruction can also be attributed to natural causes. Such as pest infestation and type of seeds originally used.

Aphids and mildew infestation

Aphids and powdery mildew are the most important pests and diseases of cannabis plants. The lower the quality of the seeds planted, the more susceptible the cannabis plant is to attack by aphids and molds.

Mary Durocher confirmed this information when she found that the high level of destruction of cannabis plants is due to the poor quality of the cannabis plants. She added that the lack of diversity in the varieties grown also plays a role in the destruction of plants by pathogens.

Cannabis producers in Canada lose around 30% of their harvests annually to aphids and powdery mildew infestations.

According to Durocher, the annual destruction of cannabis plants since 2018 could be cannabis products that are not for sale that are stored over the years and destroyed at intervals.

For example, listed cannabis companies sometimes destroy small amounts of their stored unsalable products at the end of each quarter. In this way, annual financial statements are not filled with massive losses. The endgame of this act is to make sure the company’s financial records don’t look bad or discourage other investors from investing in the company.

The inexperience of new cannabis companies also means that the cannabis grown is destroyed on a large scale. Sometimes these new entrepreneurs hire cannabis growers who have no experience growing cannabis commercially. These poor production techniques used by these farmers result in products strewn with aphids and powdery mildew

The position of the investors

The silence from investors in large cannabis companies is deafening. Quite a few of these investors have deposited millions, if not billions of dollars over the years.

Surprisingly, these people did not complain about the state of affairs.

What to Expect

Although the cannabis industry in Canada is still growing, it strives to become more efficient every year. Cannabis is an agricultural product that will always be in demand, so the current amount of waste will be contained soon enough. The big players in the industry just need to make the best decisions for things to normalize as soon as possible.

As other countries begin to adopt cannabis reforms, large quantities of products made in Canada are exported to these regions. They are currently exported to the Middle East and Europe.

diploma

All Canadian cannabis companies are making annual losses of at least 30%, according to Mary Durocher. This is probably why investors are not excited about the turn of events.

While this may be true, the waste in the industry is unsustainable and needs to be reviewed.
