When will you start selling recreational weed in New York?

The sale of adult cannabis in New York has finally been finalized and approved. This latest development is set to boost the state’s economy by at least $ 350 million.

Last Tuesday in March, Empire state lawmakers legalized the sale of cannabis to residents over the age of 21.

After many failed attempts to achieve this feat in recent years, this approval is well received by the majority of the country’s citizens.

Will sales start soon?

Now that legalization is out of the way, the latest question people are asking is “When exactly do these products start selling?”

Given the timeframe it took for other states to start selling, I understand it will take time to regulate what is a fairly new recreational cannabis market. This is because good policies have to be made, a regulator has to be determined, licenses have to be issued and sufficient supply has to be made available to meet demand from willing investors.

Fortunately, the government has determined that all of this and more could take about 18 months for adult cannabis sales to go into effect. Sales will therefore start from July 2022.

Let’s take a look at previous events.

The road to legalization; Why now?

Medical cannabis has been made available to new workers for some time. At some point during the height of the pandemic, New York had the highest number of medical marijuana users in the country. This could also be one of the factors that led the government to take quick steps to legalize recreational grass.

The bigger picture shows that these new cannabis measures have been taken to correct the corrupt system that appears to only punish the poor as well as colored residents of the state. The existing law and how it was enforced was an injustice to the colored communities in the state. If you look at the pattern of arrests, it becomes clear that the draconian laws seem to only violate the brown and black population of the state. This legalization came at the right time to end the partial and racist way that marijuana laws are enforced in the state.

Shortly before the law was passed, majority leader Crystal Peoples-Stokes said in a statement: “Today we are reversing 90 years of the ban”. She also went on, saying that the last time New York State reversed a product that had received widespread support was in 1933; when the sale of alcohol was legalized.

The drug war at the state and federal level has hit several families. People have lost so much to pay the price for these progressive reforms that the state is now introducing. The government is trying to make up for the loss it has suffered after making multiple attempts to fill the vacuum of its losses.

According to Peoples-Stokes, it is time the New York government took this opportunity to transform the lives and well-being of New Yorkers.

“It is time for the government to fill the hole in a way that not only allows affected citizens to get rid of their boots, but that they also have boots,” said People-Stokes.

Signing the invoice

New York is officially the 15th state in the United States to have a regulated adult cannabis market.

After a long battle between co-sponsors Senator Kiz Krueger and majority leader Peoples-Stokes (both Democrats) the law was finally passed.

The New York Senate and the State Assembly approved the bill on March 30, 2021. Governor Andrew Cuomo then signed the bill less than 24 hours later on March 31, 2021.

The governor’s office released a statement that legalizing adult cannabis in the state is a historic achievement. The law would ensure an automatic overturning of previous cannabis convictions; since they are now legal.

What to Expect

Now New Yorkers are allowed to hold up to 3 ounces of weed or 24 grams of concentrates. Cannabis smoking can now take place in the various places where cigarette smoking is allowed.

Most importantly, people can take immediate steps to clear their criminal record – but it has to be a non-violent conviction.

As preparations for sales continue, the medical cannabis program will also expand as the Office of Cannabis Management and the Cannabis Control Board take on the task of regulating and overseeing the business of the cannabis industry in New York.

In no time at all, adults in New York will get permission to grow a limited number (3 mature and 3 immature) weed plants at home. Pharmacies across the state will also begin stocking up on gummy bears or pre-rolls that anyone over 21 can buy.

Hopefully, by 2022, New Yorkers will have the option to order their cannabis products online and have them delivered to their homes. Provisions are also being made to create consumption lounges for residents to consume cannabis.

On the legal side, the bill allows municipalities in the state to reject cannabis companies, but those municipalities cannot choose to refuse legalization.

Economic impact

The state’s entire cannabis market – legal and illegal – will be valued at an estimated $ 4.6 billion in annual sales.

The state’s legal cannabis market is expected to exceed $ 1.2 billion in sales by 2023 and $ 4.2 billion by 2027.

The current administration has also estimated that a total of $ 350 million in tax revenue will be collected annually before a new administration moves in.

New York is poised to become one of the most important marijuana markets in the world. Existing pharmacies are already preparing for the increased demand that would begin in mid-2022. Demand is estimated at at least 20 million customers by the end of 2022. These sales have a fixed tax rate of 13%.

The New York government will have regulations in place to ensure New Yorkers don’t outplay their cards by simply smoking all over the place.

The state is in the process of making a ton of money, and hopefully a large portion of this anticipated revenue will be used to make the state a better place for its residents.
