What will be the new cannabis capital of Europe if Amsterdam bans canna tourism?
The European cannabis industry is unique. The cultures here have really embraced the medicinal benefits of the drug and the governments have backed this with advanced cannabis policies. There are cities in Europe where residents value their grass much more than French and Italian cultures value their food and wine.
Across the continent, the drug was distributed through mainstream channels and pharmacies. Residents of some cities have clear access to source their weed with less taxes. More and more countries are changing their cannabis policies as the drug becomes more popular in various industries. The skin care and wellness industries in Europe manufacture cannabinoids as active ingredients in their products.
All of this has boosted the cannabis industry in Europe. International tourists often travel to the countries to experience the unique cannabis lifestyle. Before the pandemic, there was a steady stream of millions of tourists in Europe.
Amsterdam served as the unofficial capital of cannabis
For over four decades, the legendary cannabis cafes in Amsterdam gave it an unofficial status as the cannabis capital not only in Europe but worldwide. Amsterdam receives a large percentage of the total number of tourists visiting Europe each year.
The city allows weed to be consumed in the many coffee shops located in strategically important areas of Amsterdam. It is still illegal to grow the plant for personal use without a permit.
All of this could come to an end. The current mayor of Amsterdam plans to ban cannabis cafes from serving tourists in the city.
According to the mayor, the increased cannabis tourism in the state has significantly reduced the level of security in the region. If the mayor gives his wish, it will likely end the rule of Amsterdam as the capital of cannabis in Europe and the world.
While tourists can see the city’s tulips, world-famous works of art, stunning architecture, delicious waffles and pancakes, and tiered roofs, the lack of tabs and tokes will lessen the city’s appeal. Cannabis is the city’s greatest advantage over neighboring cities and countries in Europe.
Not only will the city lose its unofficial title, but cannabis-related businesses and the city’s cannabis industry will lose billions of dollars in sales.
However, there is no doubt that either Canada or the United States of America will claim the crown of the cannabis capital of the world, provided they make the right investments and the necessary federal guidelines.
The puzzle now arises as to which country will emerge as the new cannabis capital of Europe. Countries in Europe likely to share the throne include France, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, Albania, Luxembourg, and Denmark.
France
France has the largest black market for cannabis in Europe. The country’s cannabis policy is in no way favorable to cannabis use in the country, yet it has the highest cannabis use rate on the continent. Its medical cannabis program is in its infancy and has not yet developed sufficiently.
From a legal perspective, the country is by no means prepared to be the cannabis capital. However, from another point of view, can we say that it is worth being the capital as it has a higher consumption rate than even the Netherlands?
Germany
The country has one of the most advanced political reforms in Europe. Although recreational cannabis is still criminalized, the medical industry, on the other hand, is currently the largest legal cannabis industry in Europe. Experts predict that recreational weed will soon be decriminalized, but we will keep our fingers crossed until then. From a legal point of view, Germany is unofficially the cannabis capital of Europe; for now.
Spain
Barcelona, Spain is rapidly advancing to replace Amsterdam as the capital. But the drug is technically not legal to use. Pot may only be smoked or consumed in the privacy of houses or hotel rooms (for tourists). Public consumption comes with penalties. Spain has some of the best hashish in the world.
Spain has so called cannabis clubs where cannabis can be consumed, just like the coffee shops in Amsterdam. A membership card or permit is required to access these facilities. Barcelona has at least 150 of these clubs.
Denmark
Copenhagen is home to the anarchist Freetown Christiania district, which used to be the main base for the open cannabis trade. As early as 1970, a population of hippies took over the area and traded all kinds of cannabis that were banned in other parts of the country.
All of this ended when drug-infected violence became a constant occurrence in the area. The area may have been the Amsterdam of that time, but right now there is no legal free trade in cannabis in this area.
Italy
The country has a slim chance of being the cannabis capital as cannabis legalization is still in its infancy. It is commendable that the Supreme Court finally ruled that small-scale growing of cannabis is now legal. Once legalization is approved to include the entire industry with a specific home delivery, Italy will be given a significant opportunity to become the cannabis capital of Europe.
Albania
It is not so well known that the main route for smuggling illegal marijuana products is by land via Albania. The country, like France, is home to another huge black market cannabis growing industry.
Statistics show that a large amount of illegal cannabis found in other European countries either traveled through Albania or was grown in Albania. The sooner Albania approves cannabis legalization, the sooner it will take its place as the main legal cannatourism destination in Europe.
Switzerland
The country has cannabis legalization already approved and is widely considered a cannabis-friendly nation. Here the products sold contain less than 1% THC. In order for Switzerland to be considered the cannabis capital, it has to change its THC limit values.
Sum up
This debate is sure to go on indefinitely. Each of the above countries has its uniqueness, from culinary scenes to architectural masterpieces. Probably two or three of these countries will share the unofficial title of European cannabis capital at the same time.
