What is the ideal level of THC preferred by medical marijuana patients?
What do consumers prefer when it comes to their THC potency?
A recent survey aimed to answer this question and the results, based on a very small sample, suggest that most people like “highly potent cannabis”.
However, we will take a closer look at respondents’ responses. It is also important to note that the person who submitted the survey wanted to open a pharmacy in Germany and wanted to know which threshold is best to meet in their business.
At the time of this writing, this was the poll and as you can see, we have the most votes with “greater than 25%”.
However, is this really true within the medical community or has this survey been hijacked by recreational users?
According to the comments, most of the people who use it for medicinal purposes don’t really believe that THC potency is that important.
They’re much more likely to focus on things like terpenoids that help modify the effects. We’ll take a closer look at each of these categories in the next few sections.
THC is NOT the most important factor
The first option in the list is also the second most popular option within the survey. These are cannabis users who understand that THC isn’t everything.
The cannabis plant, especially for medicinal purposes, requires a complex mixture of cannabinoids. CBG, CBV, and a number of other cannabinoids all work together to produce a certain effect, and while most people are not yet fully familiar with these cannabinoids, those with experience know that “whole plant” is best.
When you use cannabis for medicinal purposes, the point is not to get stoned, but to relieve symptoms. Hence, strains with a multiple higher potency can induce an undesirable level of “sovereignty” that renders the medical patient incapable of how they would normally function.
1: 1 CBD to THC
Again, this is more of a hype than an experience-based choice. It’s true, CBD and THC both work well together and CBD counteracts the euphoria of THC – without the other cannabinoids and terpenoids, you don’t get the “full cannabis experience”.
Nonetheless, this has become a popular option for many people who believe that a 1: 1 ratio would bring them the most benefit.
10% -15%
Most of the street grass is on these thresholds. I’m talking about the Reggie weed of yore. In fact, some of them would be even lower than 10%, but this is actually a very nice THC range for those who want to feel a little euphoric but still want to be functional.
The potent strains of yore stayed within those limits and people loved them. I’m talking about Acapulcan Gold, Jamaican Red and the like, of course.
Some of these strains have died out – at least their original genetics. However, this was the least popular category.
15% – 20%
We had this category in fourth place. These strains tend to be fluffy and it doesn’t take much to get high.
This potency level is pretty common these days and is a great option if you want to buy higher potency weed without going over 25%.
20% -25%
This was the third most popular category. However, according to the survey, many people prefer higher levels of THC in their smoke – they don’t want to go above 25%. Perhaps it is because this is the threshold to “enjoyable smoking” – when it comes to medical ailments, it is about getting relief instead of getting high.
More than 25%
The winner of this particular survey was that last category, but here it depends on what you are using cannabis for.
However, smoking above 25% is a surefire way to get you stoned – as we’ve mentioned several times, getting high is not the goal for medical patients.
This makes me think that some of the people who responded to the survey were actually recreational users who were “chasing a high.”
However, when you use oils orally, higher THC levels are also guaranteed.
Depending on the condition, higher THC levels may be a better medical option – and so this survey may have been answered by patients within this category as well.
However, if we are talking about flowers, then it is likely recreational users who filled in this last category.
So what’s the best threshold?
To be honest, the best threshold is the one that works for you. Right now we don’t have enough research to talk about specific conditions and the correlation between different THC levels.
All of the responses to this survey were anecdotal and should not be considered “law”. However, it is a great way to gauge what the public prefers, especially if you are considering opening a pharmacy.
Personally, I prefer flowers in the middle area. Anything over 10% and under 20% works for me.
I only like the “hard stuff” on very special occasions, and even then I use it sparingly.
Other people swear that high potency weed is the only thing that works for them, and if that is you then keep using it. You are the ultimate authority over your body and regardless of “studies”, polls, etc. – you know them best.
I always tell people to do their own research, experiment a lot and find out what works for them. Cannabis is a complex plant that interacts with a complex organism when smoked.
Everyone will have their own preferences… ..what is yours?
