What are the new rules for socializing after COVID?

The majority of people who followed social distancing guidelines over the past year have already been vaccinated. These people – immunocompromised, over a certain age group, or following government guidelines – may have a hard time now as their friends want to hang out and the world goes back to normal. What are the rules now?

It is clear that fully vaccinated people can basically do whatever they want as long as it is with other vaccinated people. Still, for some, the prospect of dining or going indoors without wearing a mask can feel uncomfortable. That’s okay.

As we move into this new phase, it is important to be communicative and explain to others what you are going through. This will save you some inconvenience and give you some peace of mind. Here are some questions to ask yourself the next time you’re looking to hang out with others:

While indoor eating and sitting reopens, some people are not ready to do so just yet. Fortunately, it’s summer so it’s the best time for outdoor seating. After a year of these conditions, the restaurants have adapted and managed to create a good experience for everyone involved that feels safer and more intuitive than a year ago. Before meeting anyone, talk about your options and be clear about your attitude.

While vaccinated people are safe, some may not feel ready for a hug and may reconsider themselves as they approach others. Dating is probably the toughest social activity right now, and there are no easy answers. Even so, asking someone if they’ve been vaccinated is a fair question, a question that is becoming more common and less uncomfortable. If something bothers you, you should ask. The risk of transmitting COVID-19 through kissing if both people have been vaccinated is minimal, but still you shouldn’t do it if you don’t dare to.
