Weed and the royal family?
The coronation is imminent and the great crown is to be passed on. With Westminster Abbey packed with 2,000 guests, one wonders if anyone is discreetly using a vape or edible to get through the ceremony. And if so, what would the royal family think of it?
Although Queen Victoria was known for being so conservative, an era was named after her, but apparently Queen Victoria was a medical marijuana patient. Her personal physician reportedly prescribed the Queen a cannabis tincture to relieve cramps caused by menstrual pain (not to mention giving birth to 9 children). Although it has been considered a viable medicine throughout history, the British government made it illegal in 1928, a decision that came into effect 30 years after her death. An Egyptian delegate at an international drug conference is said to have convinced enough other members that the plant posed a threat to British society, calling it as dangerous as opium.

Between Victoria and the late Queen Elizabeth, the family was very narrow-minded and dutiful. Even bad boy Edward, the Duke of Windsor, who gave up the throne for a twice-divorced woman and lived a life of partying and futility, wasn’t a fan. Here’s a clip where he talks about his doctor’s opinion that marijuana is healthier than cigarettes.
Princess Margaret, the former Queen’s late sister, was known for being a bit of a wild child. A portrait of her and her antics can be seen in The Crown series. There was a story about the princess related to cannabis. Immediately after the Beatles’ George Harrison and his wife Pattie were arrested for possession of marijuana at their home in March 1969, they attended a party thrown by posh painter and musician Rory McEwen. Entering with Pattie’s youngest sister, Paula, they bumped into some royals – Lord Snowdon and Princess Margaret. “You can’t believe what happened,” exclaimed George. “We were arrested.” “What a shame,” Princess Margaret replied. George, who was due to appear in court, asked for help: “Can you use your influence?” “Oh, I don’t think so!” replied the Princess, with evident concern.
At that moment, Paula decided to light up a joint. Completely forgetful, she took a puff and offered it to the princess, who turned on her heel and disappeared, taking her stunned husband with her.

The next royal to become a cannabis fanatic is Harry, Crown Prince William’s younger brother. Prince Harry is known to be a marijuana fan. He did a brief stint in rehab after confessing to his father that when he was 16 he smoked marijuana and drank heavily in a pub near Prince Charles’ then Highgrove country estate in western England. In his memoirs, he says he used it to get past the trauma of growing up. You wonder if he’ll be pining for a way to relax with all those eyes at the ceremony.

Known as an advocate for veterans, King Charles has indicated that he advocates medical marijuana as an alternative method for pain relief. Queen Camilla seems to be more outgoing and accepting.
So, I guess it’s fair to say that some royals are amused by all of this.
