We Tried: Laurie + Mary Jane Edibles Review

Founded by prolific cannabis advocate, writer and cookbook author Laurie Wolf and her daughter-in-law Mary, Laurie + Mary Jane is a Portland-based edibles company with a distinctly foodie-centric POV. Its award-winning truffles, cookies, fudges and savory crackers are ubiquitous on pharmacy shelves across Oregon and available in a variety of flavors.

The Laurie + Mary Jane line includes a range of full-spectrum stashbox staples like chewy chocolate chip cookies and bite-sized brownies, as well as signature items like the Cake Party fudge and crunchy cheese crackers. While other edibles tend to deliver cannabis just to get high, Laurie + Mary Jane edibles are thoughtful confections that would feel just as right behind elegant boulangerie glass as behind serving counters.

We had the opportunity to audition a curated selection of Laurie + Mary Janes edibles: classic fudge, award-winning truffles and fragrant almond cake bites.

After a weekend of weird suburban adventures, drag queen watch parties, and the everyday chaos of parenthood, here’s what I thought of Laurie + Mary Jane’s edibles.

First impressions

The cylindrical containers that house Laurie + Mary Jane’s Cake Bites, truffles and crackers look like oversized weed canisters. They opened with a super heady exhale of amaretto in the almond bites and rich dark chocolate with the brownie truffles. Both items retained a bakery-fresh perfume that literally made my mouth water.

Each product’s ingredient list supports the claim that the brand’s sensibility is to first create something deliciously decadent and then treat it. The content reads like a grandmother’s recipe cards, which makes sense considering Wolf is a recipe wizard whose contributions have appeared in publications coast to coast.

The wording is straightforward, familiar, clean, and just specific enough to set it apart from its shelf peers. Bonus: The branding is bright, easy to understand, and easily recognizable.

Almond Cake Bites

Potency: 10 milligrams of THC per cake bite, 50 milligrams of THC per packet

Fans of sweet amaretto will be delighted to know that these moist cake bites deliver a super-delicious sip of almond essence. The texture of this confection is just crumbly enough to avoid cake pop definition and still tender enough to melt in your mouth. Flavor-wise, the slivers of almonds scattered throughout are more decorative than contributory, but they add some much-needed indulgence to an otherwise velvety mouthful.

I brought my tube of almond cake bites to my team’s weekly RuPaul’s Drag Race viewing party and — although the 10-milligram per cake bite dosage felt a little mild for our tolerances — we all coaxed over the patisserie-tender arrangement of butter and amaretto.

The whole package made the experience more like sharing a delicacy with friends than inhaling an edible to get sloppy stoned. I would nibble on them even if they weren’t medicated and, honestly, that’s how I like to feel about all my edibles.

For the high-tolerance consumer, the high these bites induced was relaxed and social, eventually culminating in epic munchies and, in my case, a solid nap.

Brownie Truffle Bites

Potency: 10 milligrams of THC per truffle, 50 milligrams of THC per pack

Having auditioned all manner of medicinal chocolates over the past few years, I can honestly say that whether compared to pharmacy fare or trendy baked goods, Laurie + Mary Jane’s brownie truffle bites are top-notch chocolates.

The aroma, mouthfeel, and density of these truffles made them feel more satisfying and richer than other artisanal edibles—as if they were meant for savoring rather than passive snacking. To that end, eating just one or two satisfies a sweet tooth in a way a special occasion baked good might.

Each brownie truffle is nestled in chocolate Jimmys, a throwback for sure, but one that adds needed texture to this otherwise fuzzy candy. I downed two of these truffles — 20 milligrams of THC total — with my morning coffee in anticipation of a manic Mother’s Day. Between the silky chocolate and the carefully applied cannabis infusion, this was an excellent start to the day. And motherhood definitely felt a little lighter once the first squirt passed my lips, but your experience may vary.

Fudge Yourself: Double the chocolate load

Potency: 5 milligrams of THC per serving, 50 milligrams of THC per block

Laurie + Mary Jane produce a range of fudge flavors, some carnivalesque and others more run-of-the-mill. Splitting up the difference, I sampled the classic, no-fuss Chocolate Fudge infused with a lively sativa hybrid one day while strolling with family through a suburban mall.

I split the 50-milligram fudge block and nibbled half as we neared the mall. Coming from a family of holiday fudge fans, I felt like I had fulfilled my fudge quota early in life. It’s not a confection I usually crave, but it still wouldn’t take much convincing to reach for the Fudge Yourself bar.

This block delivered exactly what I expected: a straight, carefully crafted brick of rich, pliable chocolate. Plus, the size and shape make this device super shareable.

The high came with the same mild euphoria and vertigo I’d experienced from the other Laurie + Mary Jane products, but with a soft, bubbly edge. That bit of fizz kept me jogging through the mall for more than an hour with all the exuberance of a giddy elementary school student. It was great, and while your experience may vary, I still highly recommend it.

bottom line

The Laurie + Mary Jane brand uses simple formulations and quality ingredients to create edibles for people who enjoy consuming cannabis, but not out of reverence for culinary culture.

This brand elegantly bridges the gap between a dedicated foodie and a modern stoner, delivering premium edibles with lasting, manageable effects that even novice smokers can enjoy.
