Upcycling gift ideas for the cannabis lover in your life

It’s easy to get caught up in the commerce that goes hand in hand with gift season. Spending money – or worse, getting into debt – just to give someone a gift is not the point of Christmas or a holiday.

Spoiler: It’s about hanging out with friends and family, enjoying good food, and making memories (not accumulating things). However, if you are forced to give someone a little something, there are ways you can do it without breaking the bank or creating additional waste.

We have come up with five recycled and upcycled gifts for the cannabis lover in your life that are simple, inexpensive and sure to give them a little sparkle.

Gingerbread from our own cultivation

Are you someone with a green thumb who has managed to harvest an abundance of buds from your outdoor plant? You are proud of your things and would like to show off about it.

Sure, you could just put a bunch of your handpicked greens in a jar, put a shiny red bow on it, and let the day end. But you have the opportunity to make something special out of it.

Our suggestion: use your flower to make cannabis-infused butter and whip up a load of simple but festive gingerbread cookies.

How to do it:

First, read our easy-to-follow guide on how to make cannabutter. It’s not as daunting as you might think, but it takes patience.

Basically, you decarburize your buds by drying them in the oven, then you grind them and put them in melted butter, let them simmer for a couple of hours, then strain them, store them in the fridge, and you’re good to go! Weed butter.

Once you’ve got your cannabutter ready, follow this poured gingerbread cookie recipe from Wellness Soldier. If you don’t have cookie cutters, a juice glass will make perfect circular cookies every time.

Remember: exact dosing of homemade edibles can be tricky, so try your candy before handing out. As with all edibles, start with a low dose and go slowly to see how you feel.

Flower storage in mason jars

Help that special someone finally organize their supplies this holiday season with a set of DIY storage jars. There is guaranteed to be a second-hand shop near you with an excess of mason jars or jars – just ask.

Gather a handful of these lidded jars (maybe four or five) and give them a new life. They can be uniform so that they have a uniform look, or you can get a variety of heights for a more eclectic feel.

To make them unique, consider painting each of the lids a different shade of their favorite color to create an ombre effect when all the jars are lined up.

Don’t forget the lettering either. Design and print labels for each jar using an online resource like Canva, which has hundreds of free options to print out at home.

Alternatively, you can decorate or write on each one with an erasable marker. If you’re feeling particularly generous, pre-fill a few different strains in a few of the jars. Our recommendation: Any Dosido, this is our variety of the year 2021.

Personalized storage box

On the best days, my husband keeps his supplies in a drawstring bag that my mother made in the 90s for my Barbie doll clothes. On the worst days, several zippered plastic bags from the pharmacy are randomly scattered on our kitchen table.

If you know someone like him, a personalized storage box might be fine. Plus, you can get creative and make one that suits your style.

To begin you will need a vessel the size of a shoebox. Maybe you have a suitable one walking around your house. Some cardboard could work if it is sturdy, or maybe a perfectly sized plastic, metal, or wooden box is in a drawer or cabinet that is left unused. If not, the thrift store sure has an option.

After you’ve got your box covered, the fun part comes and the options for decorating are endless.

Some ideas: take the minimalist route and paint the whole thing all black or all brown with a top coat of Mod Podge for a shiny finish, or go the maximalist route and cover the whole thing with electric orange glitter glue.

You can also use a patterned contact paper, this self-adhesive paper that is sold in most dollar stores and is usually used to line drawers and shelves.

If you’re artistic, you can take this as an opportunity to draw or paint something personal on the sides or top of the box, or channel your inner fearful youthful self and make a collage of magazine clippings.

Whatever you decide, once you’ve decided on the exterior design, you’ll need to put dividers in place that will fit inside the box. This will help keep the various weed paraphernalia in place.

You can buy cardboard dividers online or at a dollar store, but there are many ways you can make them yourself, including those made from cardboard. Measure twice, cut once, and you’ll have a smooth layout for the inside of your DIY stashbox in no time.

Homemade moonstones

Lots of people will go months without unscrewing the bottom of their mill, but there’s gold in there!

Kief, anyway, which is like gold to some people. For the seasoned cannabis user on your list who appreciates something that sends them into space, a packet of homemade moonstones is sufficient.

Moon rocks are basically any bud you like dipped in a concentrate of your choice and then topped with a touch of kief. Be warned, moon rock can get you super stoned, but the flavors can be the next level.

To make your own moonstones you will need the following:

  • Kief (check your grinder to see what you’ve accumulated)
  • Delicious bud of your choice
  • Concentrate or oil
  • A pipette
  • A pincer

For step-by-step instructions on how to make moon rocks, follow our instructions here.

Plant your own weed kit

Do you have a cannabis plant that grew well for you? When you’ve harvested the seeds, you can create their own weed kit for someone on your list.

What you need is minimal:

  • Stew
  • An envelope for seeds
  • Some earth

If you’re feeling extra, you can even get a watering can or a couple of plant steaks when the baby starts growing.

Stop by a thrift store and head to the gardening supplies section to find a used planter. You may find soil here too, but craft stores often have small bags in case you are in need.

Put your home grown seeds in a small envelope and label it with the variety, year, and any growth notes, then box everything in a box and wrap it in some newspaper or other recyclable material you have on hand .
