A variety like Lemon Cherry Gelato is becoming a hit primarily because of its genetics. It is robust and resilient. “You can grow it in most climates and get big yields with little tolerance for faults,” says Joe Grows, a Queens-based grower who has applied for a micro-farm license from New York State.

For macro reasons, strains like LCG are an easy choice for wholesalers, who then find it easy to sell them to the average customer due to the attractive packaging, high THC content, and versatile terpene profile.

GG4 is a grandchild of the classics Sour Diesel and Chemdawg. Its classic sour genetics helped make GG4 (also known as Gorilla Glue #4) the most searched strain in New York for half of 2022. For the other half of the year, Runtz took over the top spot.

In spring 2023, GG4 lost ground to Runtz, Blue Dream, and Lemon Cherry Gelato. In May 2023, Lemon Cherry Gelato shot to the top spot with a bang, and LCG has now held the crown for 15 consecutive months. Blue Dream has held the number 2 spot since July 2024.

Lemon Cherry's gelato cousin Runtz is back on the rise

The Runtz brand was introduced at the Emerald Cup in 2017 and was named Leafly Strain of the Year in 2020. Powered by Gelato and Original Z genetics, as well as genius marketing from Yung LB and Ray Bamma, Runtz is also similar to Lemon Cherry Gelato. They are both distantly related, along with Permanent Marker (Leafly SOTY 2023), Jealousy (Leafly SOTY 2022), and Biscotti – a true family of winners.

Leafly strain data from 2023 shows that other dessert strains from the Girl Scout Cookies line such as Wedding Cake (#1 in New York in 2022) and Ice Cream Cake have fallen out of the top 10 most-wanted strains in New York. Vintage strains like Blue Dream and GG4 have taken their place, showing that New Yorkers still love the classics.

GUMBO is another popular variety (variety + brand) in New York

Similar to Runtz, GUMBO is a strain with monster branding. Luka Brazi and Alexis Major told Leafly about their plan to conquer the cannabis market in 2022, and so far they've pulled it off. The strain charts show that GUMBO is one of the top 10 strains in New York as of 2023, thanks to the huge influence of Brazi and Major.
