Top tips when giving marijuana as a gift

About 25% of people plan to give cannabis as a Christmas gift. Here are some practical suggestions to make it a success.

Last year was a turning point for Santa Claus: One in four people planned to add cannabis to their gifts. In 2024 the trend will only increase. Since the plant has become mainstream (except for a few in Washington, DC), it can be found under the tree, next to the menorah, and at holiday gatherings. Gen Z and Millennials are leading the trend, with 78% (vs. 56% of Gen X and Boomers) planning to incorporate cannabis into their vacation plans. But if you want to do it right, here are the best tips for giving marijuana as a gift.

While the administration of alcohol has a long tradition, there are some differences when it comes to the administration of cannabis. Firstly, most people have not yet been able to get it from their personal stash or fish it out from the Christmas presents already given for the year. While Costco, grocery stores and Total Wine are the top sellers of alcohol, it can also be purchased at bodegas, gas stations and other locations. Cannabis still needs to be purchased from specialized pharmacies.

First, plan your shopping in advance. The good news is that most pharmacies' hours are similar to those of a grocery store: they are open from 9 a.m. and close around 10 p.m. or after 10 p.m. This makes it easy to pick up a last-minute gift or wrap it during the day. Remember to bring cash, have a plan and relax.

The good news is that you can't be “cheap” when giving weed. Most groceries fall within a small price range, while wine purchased at grocery stores can cost anywhere from $6 to $100. And the quality of the wine can vary greatly. Most edibles, including gummies, are in the same price range and effectiveness, but emphasize quality. Wana Brands, one of the country's leading gummy bear manufacturers, is priced in the middle of the pack. If you're not putting together a large gift basket, you can also give one or two items as gifts.

Never overestimate a person's consumption. When choosing cannabis gifts, consider the recipient's experience level and preferences. For most, it's best to start with low-dose or CBD-dominant products. Gummy candies, e-cigarettes, oils, or gift cards are popular options. Also ask the budtender about the best sellers for mid-market consumers.

If you are one of the less than 50% of the population where legal cannabis is available, you should consider hemp drinks. It can produce a quick, similar high, but is legal. They are a big seller in Texas and are available at some Total Wines, local convenience stores and other locations.

Finally, a pinch of discretion, it may not be the best public Christmas gift, but gummy bears can be a funny white elephant!
