The dance days are back and just as many new autoflower seed strains to cultivate while you’re grooving in the tent, greenhouse or outdoor garden.
Each of these top autoflower seed picks for 2023 are solid go-getters: from true legends to newer breeders producing insanely outstanding autoflower strains. Unlike some regular seeds, autoflowering seeds germinated in spring and summer are sure to finish well before the winter rains.
Seed bank shelves have had to make way for more autoflower seed packs in recent years as popularity in the United States has grown exponentially.
“There’s been this massive boom in autoflowers over the last few years,” Helene B., owner of Gas Lamp Seeds (formerly Hembra), noted when speaking to Leafly recently. “We’ve seen a huge influx of people wanting autoflower seeds.”
The award-winning automatics from Mephisto Genetics
The duo behind Mephisto Genetics of Spain has been delighting more autoflower hobbyists than anyone for years with their Autoflower Cup winning genetics and documentation of the project scope and parental lineage of each strain. The team has been working on lines for four to five generations to ensure quality before anything is released.
A long-awaited project thrown back by Covid involves a trio of true gelato slices crossed with some of their own classic strains. Iced ‘n’ Baked (Gelato 41 x Mephisto’s Wedding), Sundae Thumper (Gelato 45 x Forum Stomper), and Gelauto (Gelato 33 x Sour Stomper) will all be released soon.
“We didn’t want to do anything quickly because that’s not how we work,” said Mephisto Genetics, breeder and co-founder Mitch. “We still have to do things the way we did from the start.”
MephHeads can also look forward to a special project featuring a 35 year old cut of Old School Haze from the Super Sativa Club in Amsterdam.
Autoflower seeds with big yields
Autoflowers used to be flimsy and low yielding, but not anymore. Breeder Ben Koch of Speedrun Seeds (formerly Mutant Genetics) conducts extensive phenohunting on his farm in southern Oregon to refine desired traits across multiple daughter generations.

Aptly named Granite Runtz, Froot Fuel, and Pound Dawg F5 are just a few potent strains that yield big and are readily available from Speedrun.
Many Speedrun Seeds home growers report yielding around 6-8 ounces of dried trimmed bud when using 5 gallon pots. For more experienced growers aiming for yields in excess of a full pound post-harvest, Koch himself recommends 15-gallon pots with reasonable nutrient levels.

Squirt by the Humboldt Seed company contains mono- and sesquiterpenes that make the senses last longer and make themselves particularly present in extractions. “It has to do with the molecular structure,” explained Nat Pennington, HSC captain.
Night Owl breeder Daz describes his Vacation Bubba strain as “hot and meaty”. Not to be outdone, Invader Zam has some random phenomena that – according to Daz – can boast “almost blueberry dirty diapery” notes.
