Top 5 smelly strains for funky weed lovers

I’ll be honest, my weed nose isn’t that great. Most of the time, when a friend describes the “subtle notes of berries and orange, with undertones of chocolate and pine” of a variety or whatever, grass just smells like … grass.

That’s great, don’t get me wrong, I love the smell of weed. But a lot of things just smell like “generic weed smell” to me. Maybe some grass scents are just too subtle for my nose.

So I thought I’d test my snoop by finding some of the funniest and skunkiest weeds out there. The goal? To really get these aromas up my nose and try to perceive them. Not just normal old smelly weed – the really loud, damp, and eye-soakingly hot strains. The kind that makes you flinch and turn your head when you open the bag. But in the best case.

I was quite surprised by the results of my smelly strain experiment. I found a new favorite and was also able to analyze some Skunk standards that made me wonder why they are so popular.

Regardless of my preferences, sharp grass should be celebrated for its funkiness. Here are my results on the top 5 smelly weeds out there.

cheese

Definitely my favorite on this list, the classic smelly cheese has been flying under my radar for years. The name couldn’t be more appropriate – its sharp, sour aroma is reminiscent of smelly cheese. Side note: I once smoked a strawberry cheesecake that tasted exactly like strawberry cheesecake.

With Skunk and Afghani roots, this smelly old-school strain became popular in the 1980s and originated in the UK. Its funky smell isn’t too off-putting. With its upbeat, relaxed, and laid back atmosphere, Cheese is great for hanging out and talking to friends and I definitely pick it up when I see it now.

GG4

Thanks to its resin, potency and aroma, Original Glue seeds and clones are in high demand in 2019.Glued to the couch. (David Downs / Leafly)

Sorry glue fans, I tried. I really have. But glue is not for me.

I appreciate that GG4, also known as Original Glue or Gorilla Glue, smells like its namesake with all kinds of chems and sours in its lineage, but that heavy couch cabinet – as in, I couldn’t move for an hour or two – it’s strong and sharp for me too.

Regardless of my personal experience, it is undeniable that GG4 is a modern classic. Just go to a pharmacy and look in the menu for all the varieties with “Glue” in their name. She has also been one of the top strains on Leafly for a number of years. And while not one of my favorites, GG4’s popularity shows how the smelly and gaseous qualities of weed need to be celebrated.

Sour diesel

This unholy kid from Chemdog and Super Skunk is a funky weed lover’s dream. Sour Diesel is one of the classics: a quintessential sativa with energetic and uplifting effects that has been around since the 90s. It doesn’t get any sharper. It’s not just a diesel smell, it’s also a sour one.

When I open a bag of Sour D. it usually hits my jaw as if I’ve eaten too many sour candies. It is valued for its funk and energy, and is great for adventure.

GMO cookies

Garlic biscuits mmm … (sheet)

With nicknames like “garlic, mushroom and onion” and “garlic biscuits” you can guess what you’re getting with GMO cookies. As with many of the strains on this list, its name doesn’t lie – it smells loud with lots of diesel and a hint of garlic.

GMO crosses the classics Chemdog and GSC and brings you to the moon with strong euphoric effects and gently brings you to sleep. This first appeared a few years ago and has shot up the charts with its unmistakable funk.

Motor breath

The name Motorbreath alone makes me wince and turn my head. It crosses Chemdog and SFV OG and mixes super gasy flavors with a hint of citrus. The smell alone will perk you up.

The name may be reminiscent of 80s metal, but Motorbreath isn’t a headbanger – its OG roots are reflected in the effects as it’s known for being upbeat and relaxed yet focused.
