This is how common hair loss is in postmenopausal women
Hair loss is not often discussed as a concern for most women, who are also affected by hair loss like men. Moments like pregnancy and menopause are common triggers of hair loss.
A new study published in the journal Menopause found that hair loss in women is common and occurs with age. The study found that half of women over 50 suffer from thinning hair. The study, conducted in Thailand, analyzed 200 women between the ages of 50 and 65, tracking their hair loss patterns and measuring a variety of factors that may have played a role, such as hormone levels and body mass index.

Of the women with hair loss, 73% had mild hair loss, 22% had moderate hair loss, and only 4% had severe hair loss. Researchers found associations between older age and higher body mass indices with higher chances of hair loss.
Hair loss in women looks different than in men. While men face problems such as a receding hairline, women are more likely to suffer from “female pattern hair loss”, ie hair loss that leaves their hairline intact but affects the top of the scalp.
“In postmenopausal women, hair loss is typically caused by general aging and hormonal changes. Hair loss and thinning hair become more common as we age,” explained Dr. Jessica Shepherd to Prevention magazine. “At this point, estrogen levels also begin to drop, causing hair to grow slower and appear thinner. Low levels of estrogen and progesterone also contribute to hair loss because these hormones usually make hair grow faster and stay on the head longer.”
Hair loss in women is rarely discussed and can be triggered by a variety of issues, from age to changing birth control brands. Hair loss is an often neglected topic due to its cosmetic nature. Nevertheless, there are dermatologists who have specialized in the topic and can provide the necessary help depending on the situation.
