The Religiousness of Cannabis – An Analysis of Dogmatic Stoner

Here is the Reddit thread that got me thinking https://bit.ly/3goK9t2

The following article is sure to make some people mad at me in the comments.

I don’t care though … it’s something that needs to be said.

There is a dogmatism within the cannabis community that is a little unsettling to someone who has smoked weed for over two decades.

Of course we cannot blame cannabis for this dogmatism or this “religiosity”. Dogmatism occurs in virtually every aspect of life. People find “something” they like and defend it until the end of days, even if they are wrong.

Today I want to address the dogmatism found in the cannabis community and explain why this is not a good position – EVER!

But let’s first take a look at the post that inspired this article;

A person’s account of their cannabis use

I stumbled upon this post on Reddit – a place I do a lot of research. This particular post was found in the “TrueOffMyChest” subreddit.

Here is the first part of the Redditor’s comment entitled; Marijuana is NOT harmless and anyone who says otherwise is dangerously misinformed.

I’ve smoked weed every day for most of my life. I’ve always believed that it was a safer alternative to drinking alcohol. People say it all the time; Nobody died from smoking too much weed, you can’t get addicted to marijuana. I really believed these things. But I WAS addicted and almost didn’t make it for my 30th birthday today because of it.

You can read the rest of the post by clicking the hyperlink above.

I’ll add the last part he edited in his original post to serve as the basis for the premise of this article;

EDIT: Jesus damn Christ. I came here as an addict to admit I had a problem with weed. The problem is mine and yet so many of you think you can tell me what I’ve been through. I don’t care if you love weed or if it helped you, it didn’t help me. It ruined my life. I’m glad I got rid of it and I’m happy to share my story. Call me lazy, call me a liar, say I’m looking for attention, it doesn’t matter. I feel better today because I cut grass out of my life. I have no intention of going back. I’m not saying the drug is evil, but what I’m saying is that we should be HONEST to ourselves and acknowledge that weed, like any other drug, affects everyone differently and people must and will get sick from it. To say anything else is crazy. CHS is real, people have died. It’s interesting how many people are experts when it comes to marijuana. Listening to a Joe Rogan podcast won’t make you an expert. If you’re happy to be a stoner, be a damn stoner. There are enough stories in these comments to prove that it is not the magic bullet that many of you are defending it for. If you try to quit please send me a DM. I’ll cheer you on.

And with that we have created the basis of the article. One individual shared his personal experience with cannabis – and the dogmatic users chased him like mad dogs in heat.

Of course, the original poster could perhaps have phrased its words differently in order to be more “neutral”, especially with sentences like “Dangerously misinformed” etc. – but this is HIS personal account as well. After looking through some of his other posts, I sensed a bit of “basic hostility in the general tone of his posts,” but that’s a guess at this point.

It is difficult to read “tone” in the text.

Let’s move on with the analysis.

Dogmatism for the Doobie!

This is not the first time someone has written something that puts cannabis in a negative light, where dogmatic stoners come to defend the sacred plant.

Of course, when comparing cannabis to drugs like nicotine or alcohol, the potential risks are greatly reduced.

However, it is not completely harmless, as the original poster – and several doctors in the thread – emphasized.

Some people are at risk, and as THC levels gradually rise, we don’t know exactly how that would play out in a larger sample of the population.

As cannabis becomes legal in more and more places, we’ll have more people like the original poster consuming weed every day. Potentially smoking THC levels of 25% and higher.

There are people who take dabs every day like it’s the end of the world and think “nothing is going to happen to me” unless – you don’t know.

Just because something hasn’t happened to you doesn’t mean there is never a chance it won’t happen in the future.

The dogmatic stoner will say “what about this substance” and “what about this substance” but these are only a means of evading the claim.

Marijuana is not harmless.

Anyone who goes through life with common sense and critical thinking knows that nothing is “harmless”. Even the oxygen you breathe acts as a means of worsening your body. The law of entropy is at work.

Cannabis may be more harmless than other drugs, but we should get rid of the idea that it is harmless.

Some people will have adverse reactions and it is much better to have an honest conversation about use, abuse, and the negatives that will undoubtedly continue to manifest themselves as more people consume higher amounts of more potent cannabis.

Why should we part with dogmatic consumerism?

The moment you think you have discovered the truth, give up your search for the truth and start looking for supportive clauses.

In other words, when you become blind to the fact that some people have negative reactions to the plant, you are creating a disingenuous narrative in your life. You will start attacking what doesn’t fit your narrative.

We see that in virtually every aspect of society these days, and I blame social media for the increase in these cases.

People think their opinion matters – most of the time it isn’t.

Cannabis is fine for the vast majority of the people who use it – but as with anything, there are outliers that are negatively affected.

By understanding these elements and not attacking what goes against our own internal dialogue – and most importantly, having the humility to admit that we don’t know everything – we can create a safer environment for everyone.

And that’s good.

If you’re struggling with weed, that’s fine – don’t worry about what others think. Stop smoking. And when people attack you for your own personal choices because it doesn’t match their internal representations of themselves – well … damn it!
