The Drop: 5 new weed strains for August 2022

This month from The Drop, Dante Jordan’s column that rounds up all the must-have strains from the best brands and breeders, looks at anticipated releases from Cronja, Seed Junky, Mohave and more.

Another month, another round of fresh good weed. Here are seven strains hitting pharmacies in August 2022.

Cronja: Cap Junky

Came across some Cronja’s Ginseng OG and boy was that some good weed. It smoked clean, got me silently high and its sour gas flavor had my taste buds doing jumping jacks. Weed was so good I had to reach out to Cronja to see what strains it would drop next. The answer is Cap Junky.

Cap Junky is a cross between Kush Mintz and Alien Cookies brought to life by some legends: JBeezy (Seed Junky) and Capulator (the father of MAC). The combination of the two strains brings out a gassy, slightly fruity flavor profile.

Cronja told me that the most dominant terpenes in Cap Junky are caryophyllene, myrcene, and pinene; and the effects could have you in chill mode but still active.

Seed Junky Genetics: Pineapple Fruz

The Pineapple Fruz isn’t new, but it’s definitely worth knowing about. I smoked some Pineapple Fruz Smalls a while ago and was completely impressed with the flavor and quality – I peeked at some big buds from it and those frosty thangs rocked your boy.

Pineapple Fruz is a cross between Animal Mints and Zkittlez Bx1. It smells and tastes so damn sweet, man. With the aroma you get sweet-yellow fruit notes with a little kick gas. It continues through to the smoke where you mainly get a mix of sweet fruits and premium unleaded petrol. While the terpene profile — dominant in limonene, caryophyllene, humulene, and linalool — will definitely unveil you, the strain’s truly winning quality is its effects.

I love a great daytime smoke, and for me it was an excellent wake and bake strain. If you like to combine weed with coffee and conquer the world, this might just be the strain for you. I felt a heavy stone in my eyes but a motivated type of energy in the body that never settled into a sleepy relaxation. This is some get shit done weed. You can get Pineapple Fruz all over California.

Ball Family Farms: The Phonzie

The Phonzie is the first variety produced by Ball Family Farms to be named after an actual person, J. Alphonse Nicholson or Lil Murda in Starz’ hit series P-Valley.

Like all BFF strains, The Phonzie is bred in-house. It’s a cross between the brand’s Bruce Leroy and Laura Charles, and it smells and tastes sweet and fruity. According to Nicholson, “It’s got a guava margarita with a little sugar on the rim.”

The terpenes of this strain are dominant in limonene and caryophyllene. The high has the potential to be calming and manageable, possibly even for novice users who have not yet developed a high tolerance to cannabis.

Ecozotics: Shady Apples

Your Highness in LA is growing some nice nuggets. That smiley face was delicious. Recently, I reached out to see what they came up with next, and the answer was a whole new line: Ecozotics, a greenhouse line of their flower that will also feature Shady Apples alongside a few other strains. “It brings the consumer great weed at a better price and better for the environment,” Her Highness said.

Shady Apples is a cross between Apple Fritter and Kush Mints #11. As you might expect from the name and lineage, it has that sweet apple and gas flavor that Apple Fritter produces in strains. The terpenes are high in limonene, caryophyllene, and myrcene. It’s a social feel-good high that may have that slightly drowsy effect.

Ecozotics is sold exclusively at The Pottery LA and The Pharmacy in Santa Ana, Santa Barbara and Berkeley.

22Red: Jellymintz

22Red is Shavo Odadjian from the System of a Down brand. You can scoop them in California, Arizona and Nevada. I typed to see what they expected next and heard that Jellymintz was on deck.

Jellymintz is a cross between London Pound Mintz and Jealousy. It smells and tastes of tart citrus and light menthol. The variety is dominant in limonene, linalool, caryophyllene and myrcene. The effects can be relaxing where you can just sit back and be happy. It is a potentially great after-work smoke.

Fog City Farms: Pacific Chemistry

I was introduced to Fog City Farms in the last flower hall. There’s some good people over there, man. Good weed too. After enjoying Deep West Mango and Chemistry, I asked what was next for the squad. Pacific chemistry, that’s what.

Pacific Chemistry was bred by Boston Roots Seed Co. It’s a cross between Motorbreath #15 and Headbanger that has the citrusy, earthy, gassy terpenes one would expect from this line. The strain’s three most dominant terpenes are myrcene, limonene, and caryophyllene.

In terms of effects, Pacific Chem could touch you with a gentle relaxation and a creative mindset. Find it all over California.

Mohave: Pineapple Mac

Mohave’s Weed is always good when I try. They also have some good genetics in the pipeline for August – Pineapple MAC is one of them.

Mohave’s Pineapple MAC was developed by Dr. Bred by Zodiak Genetics. It’s a cross between Gelato #41 and MAC that has a Pineapple Upside Down Cake type of feel. The aroma and flavor exude sweet notes of fruit juice with gassy additions thanks to a terpene profile predominating in limonene, caryophyllene, and linalool.

As far as effects go, Pineapple MAC put me in a good mood with a little pep. Scoop it all over California and Arizona.
