The best way to get weed pen through TSA and customs

Despite recent efforts, marijuana remains illegal at the federal level.

Sometimes you need to take your cannabis with you, and flying with a weed pen is a great, convenient and discreet way to do this.

So can you take a weed pen on a plane? What happens if the TSA finds a weed pen? And what's the best way to get weed pen through TSA and customs?

If you are a stoner, it is important to know the rules and regulations for traveling with weed pens to avoid legal issues or safety concerns.

In this article, we'll walk you through everything you need to know about traveling with weed pens, including regulations, how to pack them safely, and tips for a stress-free travel experience.

What is a weed stick?

The Weed Pen is a compact, handheld device that converts cannabis (THC, CBD) into vapor form, providing a discreet, portable and enjoyable experience.

Delta 9 THC, often referred to simply as THC, is the main psychoactive component in cannabis and is responsible for the “high” that accompanies marijuana use.

Instead of igniting cannabis and inhaling smoke like traditional methods, a weed pen heats the cannabis in the form of concentrates, oil or dried flowers to a specific temperature.

Weed sticks come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and brands. Broadly speaking, they fall into two categories: disposable and reusable.

Both disposable and refillable weed pens have the same basic anatomy. They usually consist of four simple parts: a battery, an atomizer, a heating chamber and a mouthpiece.

Generally they are small, discreet and can be extremely attractive.

Can you take a weed pen on a plane in the USA?

Technically, despite varying state laws regarding marijuana, flying with THC vape cartridges or weed remains completely illegal in the United States due to federal regulations.

Therefore, flying with a weed stick is risky. You could be arrested for carrying something. So be careful and check before trying anything similar.

We don't recommend it, but if you still want to do it, do it carefully. Apart from the labeling, it is impossible to distinguish a THC carton from a nicotine carton. Remember to follow TSA and airline regulations.

TSA allows passengers to carry electronic nicotine cigarettes (vaporizers, vape pens and ENDS) as carry-on luggage through airport security.

However, you must have your vape pen in your carry-on luggage, not your checked luggage. Because vapes contain lithium batteries, which pose a fire hazard to the cargo hold.

Each lithium-ion battery must not exceed a watt hour output (Wh) of 100 Wh; or for lithium metal batteries, a lithium content of 2 grams.

It is best to turn off the vaporizer, remove the batteries and store them separately in a protective case to prevent the heating element from accidentally turning on

It is not permitted to use or charge the vape pen during the flight. Otherwise, you could face fines or even arrest.

If you plan to bring multiple e-cigarettes on the plane, check with your airline about any restrictions on the number of devices a passenger can carry for personal use.

If there is liquid in the cartridge, it must be in the quart bag that contains all your liquids for inspection at security checkpoints.

The TSA requires that liquid containers must not exceed 100 ml (approximately 3.4 ounces) and must all fit into a clear bag the size of a quart per person.

Can you take a weed pen on an international plane?

Do not take a weed pen on an international plane as you will have to go through customs upon entering the country you plan to visit.

As soon as some countries see your pen, they start looking for drugs. And yes, they profile.

The chances of being discovered increase if there is a drug dog out there.

Marijuana is a banned substance in most countries and you can be arrested for carrying it. So be careful and it's best not to do this.

What is the best way to get Weed Pen through TSA and Customs?

Flying with THC vape cartridges in the US is possible, but definitely not legal.

TSA is usually not a problem. They are not looking for drugs, but rather at security checkpoints for explosives, weapons and other dangerous items.

Flying with empty vape pens or dry herb vaporizers is fine – as long as they are completely free of cannabis residue. That means before you go, thoroughly clean your weed shed, especially the cart or heating chamber.

Some weed pens and oil bottles are marked with cannabis leaf symbols. Remember to wipe these down to avoid extra attention and hassle.

Also, place your weed pen in an odor-proof container. If they or the airline smell something, that's a problem.

The cartridges contain liquid and must be in the quart bag that contains all your liquids for inspection at security checkpoints.

Pack it in your carrying case and treat it like a regular nicotine vaporizer. Then go through security as usual. Nine times out of ten you won't even notice it and you'll be fine.

Never put the pen in your checked baggage as electronic cigarettes are prohibited in checked baggage, regardless of whether they are for nicotine or weed.

Just be confident and don't act like you have anything to hide. TSA will focus on you if you appear nervous. Once you pass the checkpoint you are safe.

If they do that and decide to take it out of your bag to examine it, they will ask you what type of liquid it is. Just say nicotine.

They have no way to test anything else and have to rely on your word, so they just let you keep it.

This is a big problem with international flights. After passing through immigration and collecting your luggage, you must pass through customs before you are allowed to leave the airport.

Drug detection dogs are often used at customs to combat drug smuggling, especially if your flight is departing from an area where drugs are abundant.

Unless you are confident that a drug-sniffing dog cannot detect a cannabis molecule in your vape, do not take it with you.

What happens if the TSA finds a weed pen?

The TSA is not a law enforcement agency per se, it was founded to make flying safer.

Even if the TSA doesn't actively search for drugs, they may turn you and your products over to airport security (usually local police) if they notice something.

In some states and cities where marijuana has been legalized, local authorities may not care. In many countries where marijuana has not yet been legalized, they will be interested.

Even if authorities eventually release you, you could face an unpleasant search, a lengthy interrogation with security or police, and the confiscation of your marijuana vapes.

If you go to a state where it is legal, it is safer to purchase and consume it there.

Can you fly with a CBD vape pen?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is an active ingredient in cannabis that is obtained from the hemp plant but does not cause intoxication and is not addictive.

According to the TSA, you may carry cannabis products that contain no more than 0.3 percent THC on a dry weight basis or are FDA-approved in your carry-on or checked baggage.

Unless you are in a very red state and also very unlucky, CBD is fine.

Do weed pens set off metal detectors at airports?

Depending on the metal content of the vaping device itself, a weed pen may or may not set off a metal detector.

Metal-bodied weed pens are more likely to set off a metal detector. Remove the weed pen from your bags and keep it in your carry-on luggage when going through security.
