The best fall TV shows of 2024 to watch

Shorter days and darker skies mean the session needs to be moved indoors – especially to the couch. But a large selection can lead to indecision, especially if there is a bowl nearby.

That's why we've optimized your viewing experience with 8 new seasons and shows paired with the variety that brings out the best in them, from wilderness survival to anime to crime dramas.

Outlast season 2

(Courtesy of Netflix)

For Survivor fans who want higher stakes. Sixteen strangers dropped into the Alaskan wilderness without food or water must form four teams. The goal? Outlast each other in this harsh landscape before racing to the end in hopes of winning $1 million. Season 1 featured some of the most tactical and emotionless shenanigans I've ever seen on any of these wilderness reality shows. Season 2 returns with contestants already familiar with the game's gameplay and strategy. This is popcorn-worthy reality television.

Combine with: Tape. Considered one of the best strains for turning off the brain, when it comes to reality TV that often repeats itself throughout an episode, you could use some forgetfulness and wonder.

Chimpanzee crazy

(Courtesy of HBO)

A story of obsession, kidnapping and cunning from Eric Goode, the producer who brought you Tiger King. This time he returns with a limited documentary series about people's obsessions with owning chimpanzees. A captivating ride that captivates you with a mix of surprise and confusion. This is more than just a repeat of the topic. This time, you'll follow Goode, a fake filmmaker, and a real crew as they hitch a ride with the self-proclaimed “Dolly Parton of the chimp world.” A second rare opportunity to see and hear what it's like to breed exotic animals and the bizarre lengths people go to to keep them.

Freeze: Beyond Journey's End

This drug war suggestion comes from Ted from Alien Labs. Freeze: Beyond Journey's End is the 2023 anime adaptation of a popular Japanese manga series that has 22 million copies in circulation. The elven mage Frieren was part of a group of adventurers who embarked on a ten-year mission to kill the Demon King. After her success, she must come to terms with the many years of life that remain to her in this time of peace. After the death of one of her companions, she realizes how short human life is and sets out on a new quest to meet old and new companions and reunite with her fallen comrade at the Resting Place of Souls.

Combine with: Papaya Punch to stimulate creativity in the introduction and get the body in the mood to relax while watching the whole thing. In 2021, Leafly recommended this for anime and 3 years later we're sticking with that choice.

Just murders in the building

Season 3 of this quirky Hulu crime comedy builds on the previous two seasons, but has just a mild bout of recall fever. This time around, Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez are joined by another cast of big stars with a budget that will have you wondering how it plays on Hulu. Healthy and easy to watch, this is an easy binge for people who want to hang out with the family and take the attention away from themselves while still enjoying their high.

Combine with:Cap Junky, for a social climax that gets you involved in the show and doesn't leave those around you wondering why you're giggling in the corner.

Dimension 20

Dropout TV is one of the best monthly subscriptions I have. A content hub for nerds and nerds at heart, one of their most popular programs is the live Dungeons & Dragons adventure Dimension 20. Comedian, actor and game director Brennan Lee Mulligan creates the campaigns alongside a hilarious cast of comedians and improv actors , which are just as fun to watch as they are to play. Loved by a large core group of fans, the show got even bigger this year as they met up with RuPaul's Drag Race alumni for a season, traveled to the UK for a live tour and appeared in TIME magazine in an article about the rise of the Live sports were mentioned The popularity of D&D.

To the Badlands

Originally an AMC show, “Into The Badlands” is set in a post-apocalyptic land where weapons are gone and life is ruled by five cruel barons who share power in an uneasy alliance. The fights are straight out of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Like any television show, there are those filler episodes that move the story forward, but just like Game of Thrones, this is a series that isn't afraid to kill off important characters. There are three seasons to binge, and while the last one went a little off the rails, it was canceled before season four could begin, so binge it while you watch Nick Frost learn the arts of beating up bad guys he by monks who had learned to control a secret power.

Combine with:Blue dream. You have the mental energy necessary to understand this new world, but you're happy and relaxed enough not to notice that you've already flown through the entire first season.

The penguin

Colin Farrell is almost unrecognizable as the minor member of Gotham's Falconi gang, Oz Cobb (we know this, but DC Comics president Jim Lee himself approved the change). As a character who appears on screen for less than 13 minutes in the 2022 Batman film, Farrell brings depth to the life of a gritty mid-level gangster who dips his crooked toes into the comic darkness often found on the TV show Gotham universe can be found. Tony Soprano comparisons aside, the acting here is great (particularly from Cristin Milioti) and establishes Farrell's Penguin as a true anti-hero.
