The annual Kushmas retreat is near

The annual Kushmas reflection – a new tradition

We are nearing the end of 2022 and as with everything that has happened in the world, it has got me thinking. One of the main problems we have as humans is our inability to track time on an experiential level.

In other words, we are capable of knowing “what happened last year,” but we never experience the past—we only visit it through memory. Memory is fallible. In fact, every time you remember something, you distort it in one way or another.

For this reason, many personality developers will tell you that journaling is a great way to “track time.” When you write something on paper, no matter how hard you try, you cannot distort the words on the paper.

Another thing worth considering is that you will make similar mistakes unless you have a system that can help you track “what happened over a period of time”.

Which brings us to this new tradition that I’m going to start and hopefully inspire others to do as well. I do it for my birthdays, but I think it will work out well at the end of the year. This is called the Kushmas Reflection – a short essay that you write yourself (or maybe even voice notes or a video) in which you talk about the most important “events” in your life, your perception of the outside world at the time of writing/recording , and what you expect next in your life.

These elements give you a “snapshot” of “you” at a specific point in time. When you were in school, you probably made a “time capsule” at some point. This is a similar idea in nature except you check your progress every year.

This activity offers you several advantages.

  1. Allows you to put your ideas on paper – to become fully aware of who you are now and how you think.

  2. It provides “historical context” from your perspective. History is written by the victors, but as an outside observer, you may have different views and/or observations than the mainstream narrative.

  3. By knowing how you change over time, you can identify patterns in your life and make positive changes.

First, putting your ideas on paper is a great way to clear your head. It’s almost a kind of meditation. If you practice this regularly, you will begin to organize your thoughts and know which are “yours” and which are not.

In terms of historical context, I think that’s one of the more important aspects of the exercise. How will the 2019 pandemic be reported in 10 years? How much of the information you learned during the pandemic felt “reliable” or could you trust?

For many, these answers will vary.

In my personal case, I was horrified to learn how closely linked “science” was to political discourse. For two years during the pandemic, “questioning” things was akin to heresy. However, the mainstream narrative would report that “people were spreading misinformation” or something.

By having a personal account of history that you create once or twice a year, you begin to create a different narrative. story after you

While it’s certainly not “accurate” in the truest sense of the word, it does provide historical context for how “you” perceived a particular event. Can you imagine thirty years from now having a stack of papers summarizing the most important events of the year? How would this story differ from the mainstream? What benefits could you or your children derive from this knowledge?

These are questions my stoned mind keeps pondering!

Now that you have the basic gist of it all, let’s write down a “Kushmass Reflection” below as an example of how I do it. You can of course take your own approach, I’m just here to set the basics.

A Kushmas Reflection by Reginald Reefer (2022)

Dear Reginald,

If you are reading this, at least a year has passed and a lot has changed in your life. I wonder where you are today, what you are doing and if you have managed to overcome the various problems in your life that you are currently facing.

This year has been quite intense, if I may not say so. I think I’ve been through some of the hardest things I’ve ever been through and it’s still not over.

Nonetheless, if I can keep my head up and focus on the next step, I think I can make it. If so, let me know in the next reflection. I think our “future selves” would appreciate the continuity.

Anyway, let’s do some thinking!

REFLECTIONS ON SELF

This year, 2022, was a year to learn new dynamics. You became a father in 2021, but 2022 was about balancing your life. It’s pure chaos at the moment. But even in the chaos, there seems to be a finely etched path in the rubble to follow. You can’t see the whole street, but you’re definitely moving.

Whether those around you can take it or not is still debatable.

You’ve been through a lot, learned a lot, and cemented the vision you have for yourself. However, there are also a lot of things you screwed up!

You have not managed to be more disciplined about money management, although you have managed to recognize this problem. Now you’re working on saving, allocating, and budgeting your money, even though it’s gotten a lot harder. The difficulty lies in a massive increase in the cost of living due to the shit of the political class – but we’ll get to that later.

in relation to you;

  • You moved to a new place – it wasn’t easy, you fought for it, but you made it! It will be a challenge to keep this new place as the rent is a bit higher than expected – but you see it as an opportunity to grow… so GROW!

  • You have a clear idea of what you want – you’ve wondered for so many years, now you know! While you may have the vision, you’re not where you want to be yet… and that’s why it’s time to take other action!

  • You have some problems in your relationship – you and your partner both love your child, but there has been some tension lately. Most of the time this is related to money (and lack of it), but there are some other issues as well. Don’t take it all on yourself Yes, we all screw up, but you’re not always wrong either! The following situation can make or break you both, but that depends on how you both reason.

  • [ETC] – you get the picture… you want to write as honestly as possible about all the important events that happened to you. Remember, only you will be reading this, so you can be bluntly honest here.

Regarding the world;

  • In 2022 – Russia has invaded Ukraine over some disputed countries. While the media tries to say, “Russia is bad and does it for bad reasons,” the truth is that there are billion-dollar corporations sowing the seeds of war to make themselves rich. Essentially, as I write this, the US has funneled almost $100 billion in “aid” to the Ukraine crisis – most of it going to private contractors.

    • LINK2

    • LINK3

      (provide some links to articles, videos, etc.) [The first part is your opinion, the second is the resources you use for your opinion]

  • Elon Musk bought Twitter and the world lost its shit. While I’m neither against nor for Musk, the reaction to the free speech ideas has been interesting. Some people believe we shouldn’t have freedom of speech, others believe we should. Musk apparently bought the platform to uphold freedom of speech, and while this is his story, we have to tell how it’s shaping up. The truth is, though, that there hasn’t been all that much of a difference on Twitter since it took over… except that they now have 80% less staff and you can say words like “cunt” without being prompted by the platform: ” That’s not how people write tweets”.

  • OTHER IMPORTANT THINGS

I won’t write any more here because I’m just trying to show you how to do it. When it comes to the links – I would try to get links from different sources. For example, one from FOX and the other from CNN would give you different opinions that would give you a more accurate assessment of what is happening. In fact, always try to get a nuanced view on links. One at one extreme, another at the other – and then something in the middle.

This gives you the opportunity to decide for yourself what you think is true and what is not! Furthermore, if there are facts that agree with the various sources, you can pretty much declare them to be true.

REGARDING YOUR ENVIRONMENT;

In this section you write about the people around you. This is how you feel about them, about the things they did to you, what you did to them, etc. It’s about identifying any issues in your relationships and maybe allowing you to see some of the blind spots.

I’m not going to show you an actual example from my life because this shit is private and you don’t need to know. But, as I mentioned before – let this be as honest as you can muster. You don’t have to lie to yourself or sugarcoat stuff.

REGARDING MY HEALTH;

Another thing to talk about is your overall health, the big problems you’ve suffered, the big changes you’ve made, etc.

Other things you could add;

  1. Major technical innovations/discoveries

  2. Top atrocities throughout the year

  3. Top Good things that happened

  4. Who is the most evil person imaginable and why

  5. How much do you spend on goods (maybe make a list of 10 common items and list their prices next to it (watch inflation and cost of living over time).

  6. Top ideas you have or projects

  7. What you think is the most important thing you need to learn right now.

bottom line

What I’ve outlined above is just a template. You should try to be as detailed as possible. You should write as if you were recording the history of the world, because who knows, future generations might stumble across your works and could help give them a glimpse of the world and what it was like at the time you lived .

I will be doing this for myself every year from now on and teaching it to my children – I believe there are great benefits in life when you can see how things develop over time. Make Kushma’s Reflections or Birthday Reflections a part of your life and you won’t regret it!
