The 2022 California State Fair Cannabis Contest is lit.
Postpone the cotton candy and pig races because the 2022 California State Fair is coming up with a big new attraction at Expo Exhibition Center in Sacramento, California. Dried, hardened cannabis buds are due from November. Nice.
The newly minted CA State Fair Cannabis Competition and Awards will join a crowded field. The state has long had cannabis competitions, including the Emerald Cup and the High Times Cannabis Cup NorCal. But it is the first competition that has the backing of the state to crown the preferred flower as the best in California.

It’s also a major new draw for the 166-year-old California State Fair, which has long attracted its weed lovers with amusement park rides and fried nibbles. It is also the crown jewel of the international trade fair group. On display – the very best California has to offer in terms of agriculture, technology, and the spirit of the Golden State. Adding a cannabis contest should be a boon for both growers and event organizers.
It’s a moment when the state actually recognizes cannabis as an agricultural powerhouse worthy of its own competition and awards. The California State Fair is a blueprint for an even larger cannabis awards landscape, not just for the state but across the country.
“Cal Expo is excited to add California Cannabis to our list of competitions at the State Fair, which includes our best wines, cheeses, craft beers, olive oils and fine arts,” said California Exposition & State Fair Board of Director Jess Durfee. “We look forward to celebrating California’s legal cannabis industry with a science-based and unique event.”
The competition was developed in collaboration between the California Exhibition & State Fair and California-based marketing and event agency Cultivar Brands and is open to all licensed breeders in the state. Entries will be accepted in three categories sorted by light source – Indoor, Mixed Light and Outdoor – with 77 bronze, silver, gold and double gold medals awarded exclusively for cannabis flowers, but no other product categories.
How do you win it? Have the highest-tested THC, CBD, or terpene-rich buds in the state.
“California is the world’s largest producer of high-quality cannabis,” said Brian Applegarth, co-CEO of Cultivar Brands. “The California cannabis pioneers represent a story of visions, struggles, and sacrifices that have brought the industry to where it is today. These awards will recognize and celebrate our history, our farmers, our world-class genetics and ongoing innovation. “
How to win the Golden Bear
The coveted Golden Bear trophy for “Best of California” will also be up for grabs, offering a huge sales and marketing opportunity to any breeder who ultimately claims it.
How do you win it? Have the highest-tested THC, CBD, or terpene-rich buds in the state. The state’s leading cannabis and hemp testing laboratories, SC Labs, will test and evaluate the competition. Each participant receives a certificate of analysis with their laboratory results, including the chemometric reports from PhytoFacts®. “The participants with the highest concentrations of the qualifying compounds will be awarded,” explain the organizers.
