The 12 Best OG Kush Cannabis Strains of All Time

Get your grinders and bongs ready for a truly delicious list. The best OG Kushes of all time have taken us back in time and made us excited for the future.

Crucial weed from a previous generation helped shape the dispensary menus you see today. In the mid-'90s, super-wet, super-potent weed made its way from Florida to Hollywood and Los Angeles and changed the game. Credit goes to Matt “Bubba” Berger and Josh Del Rosso.

Del Rosso tells Leafly, “Back then it was just called 'Kush' before we added the 'OG' in 1998-99. … It was the strongest shit ever. … This insanely loud, lemony-smelling gas would fill the whole house or the car or wherever we drove it.”

Today, countless hundreds of strains have their roots in OG Kush. Breeders have taken different facets of OG in different directions: one will rip your face off, while another will cure insomnia. So what are the top 12 of all time?

Leafly looked at current popularity in the US and also examined each strain's impact on breeding and culture. Here's what we've landed on – for now.

#12 Face Off AND

Face Off OG is Archive Seeds' Fletch selection of OG Kush for breeding. Face Off OG isn't seen alone in the wild, but it powers big winners like Animal Face, Blue Face and Leafly Strain of the Year Dosidos. Face Off OG has spawned at least 10 generations of crosses according to its genealogy on Seedfinder.

#11 Double AND Chem

Call it the new kid on the block. Double OG Chem is the most recent iteration of OG Kush on this list, but has earned its place through a growing tradition of Emerald Cup wins, word of mouth, and ubiquity. Crossing OG Chem and OG Sour F4 creates a perfect terpene storm of fuel, chemistry, and funk, as well as a floral surprise; the serenity of OG gets a lively, energetic boost.

Two types of OG Kush combined to create the third most popular OG Kush on Leafly in 2024 – Godfather OG. A purported cross between XXX OG and Alpha OG, Godfather OG is super sedating. “I suffer from severe insomnia and this is hands down the best sleep aid I've ever experienced,” reports one reviewer. Lab samples labeled Godfather OG averaged the same top three terpenes as OG Kush.

#9 Larry AND

Larry OG (Leafly)Larry OG (Leafly)

As soon as the original OG Kush landed in California, breeders across the state pounced to put their own spin on it. Larry OG, also known as Lemon Larry, comes from crossing two of our top 4 strains, OG Kush x SFV OG, in Orange County. With Larry OG, the citrus terpenes hit the jawline, along with balanced effects between lost on the couch and buzzing around. One reviewer said it felt “like a light was shining across my skin, making all my stress disappear.” In addition to a few Cup wins of his own, Larry OG has spawned dozens of crosses spanning seven generations, including as a parent to Purple Punch.

#8 Wi-Fi AND

A look at Leafly shows that Wifi OG is available everywhere, from its native California to Michigan and even Ontario, Canada. Whether you call it Wifi OG or White Fire, the breeding result of OG Raskal is the same: Fire OG x The White produces a sponge-like plant powered by limonene and nerolidol terpenes that hit the head and body. WiFi OG ranks as the 147th most popular strain on the menu in the US, out of more than 9,000 strains.

#7 Four AND

If you want to make a better OG, just cross two OGs. Fire OG is a cross between OG Kush and SFV OG, which often featured more red pistils (or “hairs”). The effect was absolutely typical – a great hybrid. Nathaniel Pennington, CEO of Humboldt Seed Company, said, “We loved Fire OG and made Emerald Fire OG out of it.” Today, it is No. 117 on the U.S. menu.

#6 Aliens AND

(Leafy)

Alien OG is another smash hit from Northern California. Tahoe OG crossed with Alien Kush produces large, ET green flower buds with strong pinewood terpes. There are many Alien OG offspring keeping this branch of Kush alive. It ranks 145th in US menu popularity.

#5 Tahoe AND

NorCal can't let SoCal have all the fun with OG's legacy, and the Tahoe OG phenotype proves it. This is OG Kush at its best: big, green flower buds, sticky as hell, and packed with earthy, woodsy terpenes. Tahoe OG won a modest number of awards in the 2010s, but it stays alive for true OG fans and for growers who need a hard-hitting OG to spawn new versions.

#4 King Ludwig AND

King Louis OG is going strong in 2024, thanks in part to OG Louis the XIII, the “creator of LouieTheXIII.” A cross between OG Kush and LA Confidential – super calming. It's ranked 137th nationally in terms of store presence and has been added to over 300 more store menus in the last year.

#3 SFV AND

Short for San Fernando Valley OG Kush – SFV OG is the lighter green, higher energy OG Kush with smaller buds. People really notice the pine and lemon notes of SFV OG. “Like Pine-Sol inhale. I love that taste. Sticky buds.” SFV OG is associated with Swerve and The Cali Connection – who helped popularize OG Kush in the 90s.

#2: Skywalker AND

Second on the list of best OG Kushes of all time is Skywalker OG. We consider Skywalker OG to be more calming than regular OG due to its mix of (Blueberry x Mazar) and OG Kush. Others say it's just a variation of the classic OG Kush – which may well be true. Our first reviews of it date back to when Leafy was created in 2011. People take it for stress, pain and anxiety. A current top hit with Skywalker OG at its core is Super Boof. (Notable offspring: 501st OG, Hardcore OG, Falcon Heavy)

#1 AND Kush

Many people think the original OG Kush from the 90s is still the best version of it. OG Kush ranks 11th out of all 9,000 strains in the Leafly database – higher than any of its successors. When we think of true OG Kush, we think of dark, green, smaller flower buds that are resinous and pungent, with notes of fuel, lemon, and pine. OG Kush always hits hard, no matter how many times you smoke it – with a hybrid indica effect that's best for relaxing after work.

Josh Del Rosso confirms: “The best OG I ever had was the first one. That was in 1996.”

Dan Pomerantz of Rebel Grown Seeds agreed after smoking it for the first time in 2010. “The best OG Kush I've ever had was the real one, the original. It was the loudest, best tasting OG I've ever had. It's the original mother that I used in my Double OG Sour seed line.”

Ben Lind of Humboldt Seed Co. agrees: “It wasn't the prettiest weed – it wouldn't make it on today's market, but it stank and you got the same high every time. It was a really predictable high. You never developed a tolerance to it. You could smoke it for a year and still get high. And it was called OG Kush.”
