Teacher Arrested After Student Pulls Cannabis Edibles From Prize Box |

A South Carolina elementary school teacher faces criminal charges and lost her job after a student in her class pulled a pack of cannabis edibles from a box of treats intended as a student reward. Victoria Farish Weiss, 27, of Lexington County, South Carolina, was arrested Friday morning after she turned herself in to authorities, according to media reports.

Weiss reportedly told authorities that she brought a bag of candy from a dollar general store into the classroom to fill a box used as student awards, according to a Lexington County Sheriff’s Department report from a local television station was quoted. On September 23, two students were allowed to pull prizes out of the box. One of the students selected a Dum Dums lollipop while the other grabbed a package that said “Stony Patch Kids” and thought it was Sour Patch Kids.

Weiss told the student with the Stony Patch Kids to choose something else. However, according to a statement by Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon posted on Facebook Friday, the student still had a pack of marijuana gums.

“Detectives confirmed during interviews that Weiss took the pack of food from the student and told him to take something else out of the box,” said Koon. “The student went back to the box and happened to get another pack of edibles.”

After receiving the award, the unidentified student went to afternoon care and asked a teacher to help him open the pack of Stony Patch Kids. According to a police report, the daycare teacher noticed that the candy wasn’t actually Sour Patch Kids, refused to open the package for him, and instead called the student’s school, Rocky Creek Elementary School, to report the incident.

The assistant principal then went to Weiss’ classroom and found more marijuana edibles in the prize box. When the deputy headmistress confronted Weiss with the food, she became “hysterical”, according to the police report.

“No student has eaten any of the products,” noted Koon.

MPs then received a search warrant for the teachers ‘home, in which “investigators found packets of food similar to what the students took from the box in Weiss’ classroom,” Koon said. According to the product label, each pack of cannabis gums contained 350 milligrams of THC.

Although much of the country has enacted cannabis policy reforms, South Carolina is one of the few states that does not yet have regulations on legal cannabis, including medical cannabis. In addition, the Lexington County Schools Employee Handbook states that workers are not allowed to use “illegal drugs, such as narcotics, hallucinogenic drugs, amphetamines, barbiturates, marijuana, or other controlled substances.” no longer employed by Lexington School District One.

“The safety of our students is our top priority,” said Dr. Greg Little, the headmaster. “It is unacceptable for an employee to threaten the well-being of a child. We will continue to work to provide a safe environment for all of our children to learn and grow. Rocky Creek Elementary has an excellent reputation that is not tarnished by the actions of a single person. “

After an arrest warrant was issued against Weiss, she surrendered to the sheriff’s department on Friday. She was detained in Lexington County Detention Center for a period before being released on a guarantee of personal recognition. Weiss was charged with possession of a Schedule I drug.
