Study: This popular ingredient is bad for your gut
Triclosan is an active ingredient that was banned by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2016. However, we continue to encounter it frequently in products that we use in our daily lives, most commonly in toothpaste. Why is it so bad? A new study in mice found that triclosan can cause inflammation in their bowels, leading to gastrointestinal stress.
According to various studies, triclosan was harmful in animals in a number of ways, including lowering their thyroid hormones, making bacteria resistant to antibiotics, and upsetting their intestines. While these results have not been observed in humans – no triclosan experiments have been performed on them – they were enough to ring the alarm bells of various health professionals.

While this current study confirmed the belief that triclosan was harmful to mice, it was also able to pinpoint the part of triclosan that causes bowel inflammation, which could help scientists address these types of GI problems and block this effect . “By identifying the causative bacteria, new approaches to diagnosing, preventing, and treating inflammatory bowel disease could be developed,” said study author Matthew Redinbo, MD
Triclosan has long been used in a variety of everyday products to reduce bacterial contamination and prevent the spread of gingivitis. It’s usually found in antibacterial soaps, body washes, and cosmetics. However, its presence in toothpaste is of particular concern as it can remain in the bristles of the toothbrush and build up over time, making it easier for people to take.

While researchers work on a solution to this problem, it will likely be some time before the necessary protective element is available in brands of toothpaste and everyday products. To limit your exposure, read the label of the drug contents in your toothpaste and buy brands that do not contain triclosan. You should also change your toothbrush regularly so that too much triclosan doesn’t build up in your bristles.
