Storage solutions to keep kids away from your weed supply

If you have children, you know the importance of keeping your cannabis products safely out of the reach of small hands. But despite better knowledge, an Ipsos survey conducted earlier this year showed that only 25% of Canadian parents who consume cannabis edibles store them properly.

Safe storage of infused products should be paramount for anyone who has children or pets in the house, or even the occasional home with children – we’re looking for you, aunts, uncles, and grandparents.

We don’t have a food problem, we have a storage problem

A new study from Dalhousie University’s Agri-Food Analytics Lab shows Canadians are becoming less interested in edibles. The Dalhousie report, which surveyed more than 1,000 Canadians in May 2021, found that 25% of cannabis users say they prefer edibles, up from 36% in 2019.

According to the report, concerns about the risk edibles pose to children and pets have remained the same since edibles were legalized. 66% of respondents said they are nervous when children get food.

Since Legalization 2.0, when products like edibles became legal, the number of children who accidentally use cannabis has also increased. While these incidents typically involve unregulated products that are not sealed in government-mandated child-resistant packaging, they underscore the need to safely store all infused foods regardless of their origin.

With that in mind, we’ve come up with a number of options for keeping your food and smoking items safe.

Option 1: containers and locked boxes

Ally’s Canadian design lockable storage container makes storing cannabis products hassle-free, convenient and, as we say, stylish.

Ally is a solution for parents who want to safely seal off drains and medication without sacrificing good design. There is a tray with several compartments, an open lower storage space and an integrated combination lock.

Lisa Weir, co-founder of Ally, told Leafly that her company’s products are designed for a range of different consumers. “Ally is ideal for parents who need to keep goods or items safely away from children and pets,” she said, “but it’s also useful for those who have roommates, live in multigenerational households, or just want to keep their private life.”

According to Weir, what sets Ally apart is the versatility of its containers. The product blends in with any lifestyle with ease. It consists of high-quality, BPA-free and food-safe materials and is therefore perfect for infused edibles, whether homemade or bought in the store. It is also suitable for refrigeration and freezing.

For the cannabis connoisseur, the Cannasseur Humidor offers both a practical storage option and a way to keep your buds at the ideal moisture level. It comes complete with two glasses, a lock and a chamber for distilled water. The cannador is another option for those who value freshness when storing their greens.

Option 2: portable bags and suitcases

A lockable case like the Ryot Safe Case offers a sturdy, tear-resistant option to safely stow all kinds of cannabis. Another option in the lockable suitcase category is Stashlogix’s storage bags, which come in a variety of sizes and provide an odor-proof solution for securing your weed.

If you are looking for a storage option that is as stylish as it is practical, the Erbanna storage bags are just the thing. Available in a variety of patterns and materials, they look more like a makeup bag than grass storage and come with a built-in lock for added security.

Option 3: child-resistant doob tubes

If you’d like a joint locked and ready to go for the weekend, the Green Jay Pre-Roll Carrier Tube, a child-resistant doob tube, can help keep it safe from small hands.

Option 4: lockable medicine cabinets

For some people, weed is their medicine, so keeping it in a lockable medicine cabinet is a breeze. Plus, most cabinets can easily be wall mounted to be inaccessible to little tots.

There is the traditional medical look with the AdirMed Dual Lock surface-mounted safety cabinet or a more stylish option with the gleaming white Bexley surface-mounted medicine cabinet with frame. Both have adjustable shelves to keep your products neat and organized.

Option 5: small child-resistant containers

If you love having a little buds ground up and ready to roll, a small container like Medtainer can keep your greens nice and safe. Medtainers are airtight, waterproof and inexpensive.

Another option for storing small containers is the Sneak Guard. It has a proprietary freshness-keeping vacuum system that helps remove unwanted odors and comes complete with a customizable four-digit combination for keyless convenience.

Option 6: do it yourself

If you’re looking to go the home improvement route, a lockable device or tool box like the Akro-Mils ProBox is a solid option. Combine it with a Master Lock 646T Set-Your Own Combination Luggage Lock and you have a large amount of cannabis storage in one light and easily portable package.

However, smell can be a factor in a DIY solution, so you should probably keep your cannabis products in their original packaging to reduce tell-tale smells.
