Assess the damage

Because there are so many ways to break a bong, there is no magic bullet, only one solution. The first thing you need to do is check if the bong is repairable.

Bonbgfs can be made from a number of materials; Plastic, silicone, wood, or metal are often much easier to repair than ceramic or glass, which are difficult to repair even for someone familiar with a blowtorch.

Sometimes the damage is irreparable. If you dropped your glass bong and it broke into pieces, then you’re out of luck. There is no way to pick up the pieces and put them back together. In that case, it’s time to move on. But you can look forward to a new bong and ease the pain with a few gentle hits.

If the downstream part or shell is chipped or cracked, you may be able to replace that part. A clean break or tear can often be repaired and patched without great expense.

Duct tape is the first choice for emergency repairs of all kinds. This might be an option if it’s a part of the water line that doesn’t get hot and only needs 2 or 3 pieces taped back together.

First you should clean the parts to be cleaned and then dry them. This will ensure that the tape sticks well. Put the pieces together as seamlessly as possible for a tight, secure fit. Then wrap the tape tightly around the area.

This is a quick fix when you’re in a pinch, and it’s only temporary and doesn’t work well with parts that are exposed to water.

If duct tape isn’t up to the task, you might want to try some adhesion promoters. Try food-grade epoxy or silicone to make sure what you’re using won’t harm you. Many binders like super glue can contain harmful chemicals that can be released under heat or leached into the bong water.

This is a longer term solution to the tape and a better option when multiple broken parts need to be repaired.

As with tape, you need to make sure all parts are clean and dry before using silicone or epoxy and make sure all edges are smooth. If there are any jagged edges, you should file them down and then rub them against sandpaper to make them smooth.

For food grade silicone and epoxy, you should follow the package directions to prepare the silicone. Then gently spread it along the cracks. Then press the pieces together and wait until they are firm.

If you can’t find food grade epoxy or silicone, a two part epoxy may be suitable. This type of epoxy consists of resin and a hardener. Please ensure you purchase one that is heat resistant and will bond to glass, but do not use on areas that will remain submerged in the bong’s water or be exposed to direct heat.

What not to use

Duct tape, silicone, and some epoxy are all viable ways to fix a bong; They’re not perfect, but they’re better than many other options some people try.

Things not to try to fix your bong include super glue, putty, and other similar sealants. Superglue is a big no-no. First, it doesn’t stick to glass, which is obviously a problem when trying to fix a glass bong. And even more annoying than that is that it contains harmful chemicals that can be toxic to humans. Some other adhesives work on glass, but many of these contain harmful substances that you don’t want near the inside of your body.

If the bong is too damaged to repair yourself, you may need to see an expert.

Broken glass bong repair prices depend on three main factors; The severity of the damage, the materials used, and the experience and time required by the repairer.

Most experienced glassblowers can repair glass bongs using a torch and kiln method. They will require you to remove any temporary repairs you have made and ensure all parts are thoroughly clean.

If it’s a broken or chipped mouthpiece or downstream piece, they can often heat that part and melt it back into the bong, or replace the part entirely. In many cases cracked or broken bases can be removed and replaced and even larger bases added to prevent the bong from tipping over in the future.

Professional help can be expensive, but it can also ensure your bong is repaired properly the first time and works much cheaper than buying a replacement.
