Pre-rolls more popular in Canada than in the US – Cannabis | weed | marijuana

According to a recent report by Headset, pre-rolls are more popular in Canada than in the US.

Using real-time sales reports between January and June 2022, Headset found that US and Canadian consumers spent over $752 million and $402 million (CAD) on pre-rolls.

While both countries enjoy this product, Canadians love it. Almost a quarter of Canada’s cannabis sales in 2022 will come from pre-roll purchases.

Pre-rolls may be more popular in Canada than in the US, but that doesn’t mean they’re not popular with Americans. In the U.S., pre-roll sales account for 12.6% of all cannabis sales, up 2% year over year.

Likewise, the US consumes far more connoisseur/infused pre-rolls. These specialty pre-rolls account for 41% of their total pre-rolls sales, compared to 11.2% in Canada.

The most popular pre-roll products in Canada are single-strain hybrids, accounting for 42% of total sales.

Despite being popular in both countries, pre-rolls are significantly more popular in Canada than in the US. Almost $1 in $4 spent on cannabis in Canada goes into pre-rolls.

Canadian pre-rolls have twice the market share compared to the US.

In the United States, consumers tend to spend more on vape pens, edibles, and concentrates.

Years of trends show that pre-rolls are growing in popularity in both countries. Again, we can see that pre-rolls are more popular in Canada than in the US. The total market share since June 2021 shows a difference of almost 6% in the two countries.

However, this is at the expense of flowers, which have reduced their overall market share by 9.1% in Canada and 5.4% in the US.

Takeaways from the Pre-Roll Market

Pre-rolls are common and growing in both countries. The number of people buying flowers has declined as pre-roll purchases have steadily increased. It will be interesting to see if this trend continues in the second half of the year.

Overall, Canadian consumers devote almost twice as much market share to pre-rolls as US consumers. As a result, pre-rolls are more popular in Canada than in the US, but only slightly. At the same time, they are the second most popular cannabis product in Canada. In the US, pre-rolls rank third.

Connoisseur/infused pre-rolls are more popular in the US than Canada. But this category is also growing in Canada.

Overall, pre-rolls may be more popular in Canada than in the US, but Canadians pay 17% higher prices compared to US pre-roll prices.
