A traditionally conservative country, what does Poland see in marijuana?

Poland was a conservative country. The Catholic Church has been deeply rooted in Polish culture and identity for centuries. However, there is a change that was identified as Catholic in the 2021 census in 2021, 87% before a decade ago. The church played an important role in the transition from communism and dictatorship to democracy. It has been in the news lately, so where are Poland and cannabis? While the country has some of the most restrictive drug laws in Europe, the latest developments in medical marijuana policy have created a unique situation.

Cannabis for leisure use remains illegal in Poland. Possession, consumption and cannabis trade with more than 0.2% THC content are a crime. Since 2011, however, the prosecutors have had the opportunity to hand over small quantities for personal use, especially for first offenders.

In July 2018, Poland legalized medical cannabis, whereby the law came into force in November this year. This change enabled doctors to prescribe cannabis under the same conditions as other controlled substances

The Polish cannabis market has shown a significant growth potential. It quadrupled from 2021 and is expected to be more than doubled by 2026. From 2021, over 2.3 million people in Poland consumed both legally and illegally cannabis, with illegal users being powers more than 60% of all consumers.

However, the medical cannabis system faces various challenges:

  1. Trust in imports: Polish law prohibits the home production of medical cannabis, which completely depends on imports.

  2. Insurance protection: Medical cannabis treatment is not covered by health insurance, which leads to high costs for patients.

  3. Supply problems: Linging registration and pension examination procedures can occur to a defect.

  4. Limited availability: Medical cannabis is usually only available after special order in pharmacies.

Despite the restrictive laws, it has achieved a remarkable increase in cannabis recipes. The number of recipes exhibited for medical marijuana in Poland.

In Poland, the support of the cannabis reform is increasingly supported. A working group in the Polish parliament, the SEJM, has designed laws in which changes were proposed that are similar to those in Germany. However, the Law and Justice (PIS) party has not shown any support for these reforms, which has significant changes before the parliamentary elections 2024. During the Second World War, they developed a call as a strong will and good fighters, so it will be interesting to see what is happening.
