To create the Point-of-Sale Software in the Cannabis Industry – 2022 report, Cannabiz Media’s research team conducted approximately 34,000 outbound phone calls to inform cannabis dispensaries and retail locations across the US and Canada about their current use of POS software consult.

Point of sale software leaderboards in the US and Canada
In the United States, the top five POS software vendors account for 60% of the market in 2022, but that percentage is down from 61% in 2021, 66% in 2020, 68% in 2019, and 76% in 2018 dropped.
The same top five brands that topped the US POS software leaderboard in 2021 are also at the top in 2022, but some have changed their positions in the leaderboard. Here are the market share percentages for the top 5 vendors:
- greenbits: 16.4% (up from 19% in 2021, but still in first place)
- BioTrack: 13.4% (up from 16% in 2021, but still in second place)
- Leaflogix: 11.9% (vs. 6% in 2021 and moving from fifth to third place)
- flow stroke: 11.8% (vs. 13% in 2021 and moving from third to fourth place)
- MJ highway: 6.5% (vs. 7% in 2021 and moving from fourth to fifth place)
In Canada, the top two POS software providers dominate 73% of the market. This is the first year that Cannabiz Media has tracked POS software in the Canadian cannabis markets, therefore no historical data is available. The top 5 providers in 2022 are as follows:
- COVA: 47.3%
- green line: 26.4%
- techpos: 5.6%
- GlobalTill: 4.8%
- the childPOS: 2.74%
Licensing growth for US parent companies
Beginning with our 2021 POS Software Report, we started tracking the combined parent company market share as mergers and acquisitions became more common. The results show that Dutchie’s license growth compared to Flowhub, Akerna and BioTrack increased significantly more than last year. License growth by year and company in 2022 is as follows:
- Dutch: increased by 42%
- flow stroke: up 19%
- Akerna: up 11%
- BioTrack: up 4%
Change of POS software provider in 2022
In 2021, 298 stores switched from one POS software provider to another, significantly more than the 120 switches tracked in 2020. The number of switches has dropped to just 176 reported in 2022.
Leaflogix won the most customers through switches in the US, and COVA won the most in Canada. Looking at switching dates over the past three years (2020 to 2022), Leaflogix has gained the most customers through switching, compared to BioTrack, which lost the most customers through switching.
Point of sale stations in 2022
For the first time, Cannabiz Media’s research team began by asking stores how many outlets they have as part of our phone survey. There is a wide range across the country and in stores, but the average number of POS stations is three.
Interestingly, the data shows that Leaflogix and Treez customers are likely to have more POS stations (median of five for each brand) compared to other providers whose customers most commonly have a median of two or three POS stations.
