Omikron vs. Delta: Which is more likely to lead to a COVID-19 reinfection?
There is new evidence of Omicron’s COVID-19 variant. Omicron is able to produce more reinfections than previous variants of the virus, according to a new study.
The study was conducted in South Africa, where the variant was first discovered and is still raging. Out of 2.8 million positive tests for the Omicron variant, there were 35,670 reinfections, suggesting that Omicron can overcome some of the natural protection that developed from a previous infection.

While these results don’t suggest that Omicron leads to more deaths and serious illnesses, they do suggest that it could outperform the Delta variant, making for a more problematic virus for vaccinated and unvaccinated people alike.

Experts said Omicron’s many mutations could make it more likely to evade immunity. “This does not bode well for vaccine-induced immunity,” said the virologist Florian Krammer to Science.
According to Natalie Dean, a biostatistician at Emory University, the study suggests that early infection offers only half as much protection from Omicron as it does from Delta.

As researchers investigate the variant further, they will begin to paint a clearer picture of the matter. At this point in time, experts are hoping that the reinfections caused by the new variant will be mild and that protection from vaccines and previous infections will result in a disease that is not serious and will turn COVID-19 into any other disease that can do one Vaccine to be repulsed.
