Ohio's Legal Cannabis Buyer's Guide for 2024

Ohio's legalization issue 2 is going into effect, but it's not like a major movie premiere where cannabis is legal in every city at once. Voters just legalized it last November, and the Buckeye State is quickly implementing retail legalization, unlike other states that took years. Read on if you're a black market shopper just coming in from the cold, or a law-abiding guy who's just been waiting for that beautiful day.

It will be available at medical cannabis dispensaries that are allowed to sell cannabis for recreational use. All summer long, new legal stores will pop up all over the state – like stars appearing in the night, one by one. We'll list the legal stores below.

Applications are processed by the Ohio Division of Cannabis Control on a first-come, first-served basis. Bloom Medicinals, for example, reportedly hopes to have its application approved by June 24. Ohio has about 126 dispensaries statewide.

You can possess 2.5 ounces of flower and up to 15 grams of extract. You can't smoke in public or drive or boat while high. For more background, see our article “Ohio just voted to legalize cannabis. Here's what happens next.”

At least 54 cities and counties – mostly suburbs – will opt out of sales for the time being. Citizens affected by local bans can appeal to their elected representatives, as can cannabis opponents.

How much will it cost?

Cannabis currently costs about $3 per gram for a low-grade medical “shake,” which is a good baseline for future recreational prices. The high end is $12 per gram. Expect prices to rise about 20% as demand exceeds supply. Eventually, supply will balance out and exceed demand, and prices will start to fall. In mature cannabis states like Oregon, joints can be had for as little as $2.

One-gram cartridges cost between $50 and $60.

Ohio will impose a 10% excise tax on cannabis sales. The state will impose a 5.75% sales tax and local taxes of up to 2.25%. The industry in Ohio could generate $1 billion a year from about 1 million monthly smokers.

What happens next?

New adult-use stores are opening almost weekly, with the pace determined by how quickly regulators approve applications. Ohio has 126 medical dispensaries, a large portion of which are aimed at serving the adult-use market of one million people.

Regulators award applications on a first-come, first-served basis, so the sooner a dispensary submits its application, the sooner it will receive a response from the Ohio Division of Cannabis Control.
